Record number of Toledo Bend lunker bass replicas awarded

Dinah Medine, coordinator of the Toledo Bend Lake Association’s Lunker Bass Program, awarded 61 lunker bass replicas to anglers at the Sealy Outdoors Big Bass Splash at Cypress Bend Park on Sunday, May 18. The fish were caught in Toledo Bend from May 19, 2013 to May 15, 2014. Among the 61 fish caught, 41 are in the 10-lb. class (weighing between 10.00 and 10.99 lbs); 14 in the 11-lb. class; and 6 meet the 12-lb. class with the largest weighing in at 12.89 lbs. Eight of the lunkers (11.81 – 12.89 lbs.) moved into the Top 100 largest bass caught on the Bend and the fishermen were awarded a Top 100 hat and certificate from Mrs. Linda Curtis-Sparks

Many Bass Club holds May tournament

Tim Oxley was named winner of the Many Bass Club’s May tournament with a five fish limit weighing 13.53 pounds.

It may have been a while, but persistence paid off for Tim Oxley, who was named this month’s winner of Many Bass Club’s monthly tournament with a five fish limit weighing 13.53 pounds. Oxley caught his fish in the six mile area of Toledo Bend using a jerk bait and Carolina rig in six to 15 feet of grass filled water.

Fathers, children gather for day of sports

Baseball is a sport that is traditionally handed down during bonding time from father to child, and it was no different during this special event.

A fisherman (age and place of residence unknown) apparently drowned on Toledo Bend Lake in what was described as a boating accident on Sunday, May 4. The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Dept. received a call from a Florien woman at 4:49 p.m.

The Florien Lady Blackcats, coached by Bruce Stewart, went into the LHSAA Fast Pitch 56 state tournament, sponsored by State Farm, in Sulphur last weekend with high hopes. In 2013, the Lady Blackcats won it all by defeating the Anacoco

Darwin, Green bring home gold from Tiger Relays

Many senior James Darwin easily clears the bar during action at the Many Tiger Relays, held on April 11 at MHS. Darwin was one of two Tigers to win individual gold as he cleared six feet, two inches. Jacob Green was the other Many Tiger to win an event as he was almost a full second faster than second place in the 400-meter dash.

Although neither the Many Tigers nor the Many Lady Tigers captured the team championships at the annual MHS Tiger Relays, a pair of individual performers came away with gold. James Darwin and Jacob Green were victorious in the high jump and 400-meter dash, respectively, for the Tigers, helping their team tie for second place in the meet behind North DeSoto and even with Winnfield at 67 points.

Mong victorious again, wins April tournament of Many Bass Club

Derek Mong is proving to be almost unstoppable during the recent Many Bass Club tournaments and the April edition was no different. He weighed in a five-fish stringer in the event at an impressive 21.04 pounds to claim first place. He also reeled in the Big Bass of the event at 6.43 pounds.

Can Derek Mong be stopped? The 2013 Many Bass Club Angler of the Year has captured another monthly tournament championship, winning the April tournament held by the club at Toledo Bend. Fishing a jig in 6-12 feet of water in the White Oak area, Mong reeled in an impressive five-fish stringer, which tipped the scales at 21.04 pounds, which included the Big Bass of the tournament, a lunker weighing 6.43 pounds.

Florien rolls past Zwolle, 18-0

The Florien Lady Blackcats needed just 45 minutes to take care of business last Tuesday afternoon. One day after blanking Leesville in just 38 minutes, Florien improved to 20-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in District 3-B play with a convincing 18-0 victory over the Zwolle Lady Hawks.
