Sabine team named Dist. 8 champs

Sabine Dixie Youth 11 year old all stars have recently been named District Eight champions. The undefeated team will now head to the state tournament in Monroe to hopefully bring back a state title.

Williams, Fontenot win June Southwest Bassmasters tourney

Southwest Bassmasters held their seventh tournament and first night tournament of 2015 on Toledo Bend on June 27. Sixteen members and six guests started at 7 p.m. on Saturday. It was a beautiful night with cool temps, minor scattered showers and thunderstorms, and light breezes. All 12 boats brought some nice fish to the scales at Cypress Bend at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Sabine teams shine at 2015 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships in June

The arrows were flying and the guns were blazing as six Sabine Parish 4H-ers attended the National Championships last week in Grand Island, Nebraska. A total of 635 of the top shots in the nation gathered to showcase their skills while they competed in various disciplines. Sabine youth represented the parish well and were able to bring home the ribbons.

Ebarb shooters head to nationals

For the second straight year Benny Bell Agriscience teacher at Ebarb, will be taking his muzzle-loading team to the National Shoot. The team qualified for the national tournament at Grand  sland, Neb., after repeating as state champions back in April.From left are Joseph (Big Joe) Smith, Ethan Ebarb, Bell, and Justin (Big Bass) Bass. Mackenize Martinez (not pictured) helped the team win the State Championship, but cannot qualify for Nationals since she was a member of the EHS team that went to Nationals last summer. The rules prohibit a shooter  from participating in the National Shoot more than once in the same event. The team will depart for Nebraska on June 20.

Hemphill Hornet Bass Club holds awards banquet

The Hemphill Hornet Bass Club awards banquet was on May 19 at  ig Mamma’s Seafood Restaurant. Sponsors of the club, local fishing pros, school administrators, parents and family members showed up to join in on the celebration. The club would like to thank Clay Mathis for opening up his restaurant just for this event and serving nearly one hundred people in less than an hour. The fish and shrimp came out hot and delicious to everybody’s satisfaction. Nobody went away hungry. After eating, Tournament Director, Jeff Manous, gave the welcoming speech and the club started the awards ceremony  by introducing and recognizing the attending club’s sponsors,  First State Bank, Shelby Savings Bank, Farmers Cove RV Park, the  Toledo Bend Lake Association, Deep East Texas Electric Co-Op, McGraw Signs, Holly Park Marina, Hemphill Meat and Smokehouse,  and BassCashBash’s P.D

Leger takes home Big Bass Splash trophy

The Big Bass Splash celebrated it’s 29th year of existence on May 15-17 at Cypress Bend Park. Participants ranged in variety and skill level competed for the $500,000 to win, with hour winners including people from Rhode Island to California.

Lady Blackcats come up big in championship

The Florien Lady Black-cats Class B title game looked like a pitchers duel during most of the innings, as Flo-rien pitcher Abbey McMillian and Quitman senior Lyndsey Hayes kept each opponent scoreless through four in-nings. Florien finally leaped ahead at several good at-bats by Haylee Tidwell, Adrianna Phillips, and Ryleigh Ruther-ford, who were put on base by a walk, error, and single.

Florien baseball wins first state title

The Florien Blackcats first state finals appearance for base-ball proved to be filled with good fortune as the team scored six runs in the first two innings to record an impressive 10-2 vic-tory over Fairview in the Class B championship game.This first baseball champion-ship capped a 23-6 season for the second-seeded team in the play-offs.

Youth bream fishing tournament set for May 30

Ho Minti Society, Inc. will host a Bream Fishing Tournament for children ages 5-12 Saturday May 30. The program will be located in Zwolle on Toledo Bend Lake at the end of Highway 1215 (Old Yellow). Contest starts at 7 a.m. and continues until 11 a.m. with weigh in and free hot dog lunch to follow.
