Locals contribute to softball state tournament

Two Northwestern State intramural teams won Louisiana Collegiate Intramural-Recreation Sports Association championships this weekend at bi-annual LCIRSA state tournament in Monroe.

Northwestern State won first place in women’s basketball and co-rec softball. More than 600 students from 14 state public and private colleges and universities competed.

“Our students did an outstanding job of representing the university at the tournament,” said Jason Stelly, assistant director of intramurals. “Winning two state championships shows the hard work both teams did and the overall quality of Northwestern State’s intramural programs.”

City Bank attends Bass Unlimited banquet

The 15th Annual Bass Unlimited Banquet was held at the Cypress Bend Park Pavilion, Friday, April 21. The banquet has become a much-anticipated event in the Toledo Bend Lake area. Proceeds from the event will help fund projects to improve the lake and amenities surrounding it. Those attending and representing City Bank were Lamar and Tanya Peterson and Melanie and Debra Holden

Oxley takes Toledo Bend Bass Club tourney

Well the weekend was beautiful with a little wind, but that didn’t stop Tim Oxley winning first place with 10.63 pounds flipping cover in back of creeks.

Florien baseball currently selling Houston Astros tickets

 

The Florien High School Black Cats baseball team is currently selling field box IV ticket vouchers for $40 to watch an Astros home game of your choosing between April 4 and June 14, with a blackout date of May 20.

This is a great opportunity to watch the Astros play the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, or New York Yankees.

Time to register youth for Fish Fest 2017

Ashton Pryor of Many caught this impressive stringer of catfish last year at the TBLA/Sabine SWCD Fish Fest. The .93 pound catfish on the left won second place honors.

The Toledo Bend Lake Association and Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District are beyond thrilled to share an open invitation for Fish Fest 2017. The eighth annual tournament will take place on Toledo Bend Lake at the Sabine River Authority’s Cypress Bend Park. Fishermen will turn the park turquoise in their TBLA/Sabine SWCD t-shirts on Saturday, June 3.

Toledo Bass Club holds March tournament

The March tournament of the Toledo Bass Club was held on a very nice weekend following a cold front, and Lee Ballard figured the bass out and came in first place with 11.61 pounds.

Ballard fished the mid-lake area fishing soft plastics. Tim Oxley came in second place with 10.89 pounds, and Mr. Richard Pesson came in third place with 9.45 pounds.

All Sabine Basketball Teams for 2017 have been announced

Making the Boys first team are MVP Brian Brown of Negreet, Quinn Perry of Zwolle, Tabarious Garner of Many, Brock Booker of Florien, and Hilton Frazier of Zwolle. The second team is made up of Keion Sweet of Florien, AJ Carter of Many, Daniel Thomas of Zwolle, Ken Cade of Many, and LaDarius Cutright of Zwolle.

Making the girls first team are MVP Aja Law of Florien, Kelsey Thaxton of Negreet, Morgan Miller of Florien, Ella Mitchell of Zwolle, and Samiah Scott of Pleasant Hill. The second team is Mallory Mitchell and Ashlyn Etheridge of Converse, Marneshia Aldredge of Many, Kendra Richardson of Florien, and Jaleah Lee of Many.

Zwolle Hawks take 15th championship

The Zwolle Hawks won their 15th state basketball championship recently in Lake Charles at Burton Coliseum. This victory did not come easily though.

The semifinal game on March 6 was against district rival the Florien Blackcats. Previously, the Hawks and Blackcats had split regular season games, each team winning two games apiece.
