Red River legends, folklore to be presented

Article Image Alt Text

Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. (CRNHA) will host a brown bag lunch and learn lecture entitled, “Red River Legends and Folklore” on Saturday, August 11 at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Grand Ecore Visitor Center.

All along the banks of the mischievous Red River from Natchitoches north to Shreveport, the historical culture has produced compelling stories that come from everyday life. The echoes of these are heard yet today.

Professor Cheryl White, Associate Professor of History at Louisiana State University at Shreveport, will explore some of the folklore surrounding the Red River and its historical basis. “The Red River is full of myths and many of them have been researched and preserved in the works by Dr. White.” remarked CRNHA Heritage Ranger Michael Mumaugh.

Do people even iron anymore??

I can remember watching mother iron when I was a little girl. She would set up the ironing board and fill a green 7-Up bottle with water, and plug in a stopped with tiny holes, so she could sprinkle water on the item she was ironing. I was mesmerized about how she patiently pushed the iron back and forth to get a neatly pressed short.

I expressed so much interest in ironing that one day, she put me to work!! I sat on a high stool and she placed a stack of handkerchiefs in front of me. I ironed them and was ready for more. Next, she gave me a stack of cloth napkins. I was having so much fun that I think I would have ironed tea towels, sheets and more!!

THE COWBOYS

By Pete Abington

Cowboy owner Jerry Jones was right up front last Wednesday when he stated that the Cowboys will stand for the National Anthem. He declared he wouldn’t support anyone who chose to stay in the locker room. Last week the NFL and the players union agreed to suspend the rule approved by owners this Spring that gave the players the option to stay in the locker room while allowing teams to distance players who took a knee or sat out during the Anthem. This was suspended when the Miami Dolphins reported that players who protested during the Anthem would be suspended for up to four games under team policy. Jerry Jones, last season, and then emphatically this season, said the player will be required to stand for the flag.

Patchwork

By Donna Smith Ammons

What happened to the “good old days” of childhood? Remember shopping for school supplies and picking out just the right color of rulers, or the perfect tin lunchbox or what size your new box of crayons would be?

I can remember anticipating going school supply shopping for a few items, but paper, paste and other items were furnished back then.

What happened to long summer vacations? We didn’t travel to far off places, but we were out of school for three months. Nowadays, the summers go so fast with baseball, soccer, traveling to Gramma’s and trying to get in a few fun family times. Back then our travels were in a loaded down station wagon going from one coast to another, since we were a military family.
