“Aging Gracefully” lecture presented

Sister Martinette Rivers, with Sisters of Our Lady Of Sorrows presented a workshop called “Aging Gracefully.” The large group enjoyed the lecture and lunch. Sister Rivers is a native Of Zwolle. Her parents were Tom and Lizzie Ebarb Rivers.

Dave Glen Weaver

Funeral services for Dave Glen Weaver were July 5 at Hornbeck Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Buddy Freeman officiating. Burial followed in Pisgah Cemetery under the direction of Jeane’s Funeral Service. He was born on June 30, 1966, in Corvallis, Oregon and passed away on July 2, 2018, in Hornbeck at the age of 52. He grew up in Hornbeck, attended Hornbeck High School, and was a member of Hornbeck Full Gospel Church. For many years, Dave worked as a heavy equipment operator for J.D. Lites Company. He was a jack of all trades who loved to hunt and fish. Spending time with his family was the thing that Dave loved the most. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Jr. and Francis Weaver; grandparents, George Sr. and Frieda Weaver, and Glen and Sylvia Gibson; brother, Ferlin Knippers; sister, Cheryl Sigler; nephew, Davin Russ and niece, Shantell Knippers.

Greg Barber

Funeral services for Greg Barber, 53, of Many was held July 9 at Lewing Chapel with the Reverends Donnie Paul Lewing and Joe Hendrickson officiating. Burial followed in the Lewing Chapel Cemetery. He was born on Monday, April 12, 1965 in Many, and passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 in Many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Lamar Barber and Delores Azlea Lewing Barber; J.W. Weldon; brother, John Gavin Barber; maternal grandfather, Lud Lewing; maternal grandmother, Gladys Lewing; and paternal grandparents, John and Maybelle Barber. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Denise Barber of Many; sister, Elda Veuleman and husband, Jerry, of Many; brothers, Terry Tedder and wife, Pam, of Many, Gary Joe Tedder of Texas and Pat Weldon of Hemphill, Texas; special nephew/son, Rick McConnell, Jr. and wife, Kristen, of Many; special grandchildren, Gavyn and Gynger McConnell; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Larry Brandon Maroney Jr.

Services for Larry Brandon Maroney Jr. were held July 5 at the Wallace Baptist Church in Pelican. The Rev. Jeff Jinks officiated. Interment followed at the Beulah Cemetery in Marthaville. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Brandon Maroney, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Marvin and Ernel Frazier; paternal grandparents, Waylon and Louise Maroney; and cousins, D.J. Frazier and Isabelle Hope Frazier. Left to cherish his memory is his mother, Janet Kay Frazier Maroney of Pleasant Hill; sister, Jennifer Callens and husband, Jason, of Stonewall; uncles, Darren Frazier and wife, Kathy, Basil Maroney and wife, Gayla, of Pleasant Hill and Huey Maroney and wife, Mary Jane, of Shreveport; aunts, Marty Wilcher and husband, Larry of Queen City, Texas and Waverlyn Wilson and husband, Robbie, of Natchitoches; special nephew, Coltyn Maroney; niece and nephew, Hailey Peacock and Wade Callens; and by a host of other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services for Dorothy Ann Grove, 79, of Shreveport were held June 24 at Mt. Zion Cemetery with the Rev. Spencer Lovitt officiating. She was born on Saturday, February 4, 1939 in Many, and passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Life Care Hospital in Shreveport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Grove; parents, Rufus and Effie Brumley Savell; sisters, Margie Brown and Carolyn Barnhill; and brother, Charles Savell. She is survived by her son, Bruce Grove and wife, Tracy, of Greenwood; brothers, James L. Savell and wife, Linda, of Mineloa, Texas and Barry Savell and wife, Millie, of Natchitoches; grandchildren, Paige Tynes and husband, Jason, of Gloster, Alanna Boyd and husband, Wayne, of Stonewall and Brandon Grove of Greenwood; great grandchildren, Kenzie, Mac, Gracie, Payton, Annaleigh, Blakely, Skyler and Cooper Joe; along with a host of family and friends.

Sarah Lou Bright Maines

A remembrance and celebration service for Sarah Lou Bright Maines, 64 of Gladewater, Texas were held July 9 at White Oak Community Church located in White Oak, Texas. On June 29, 2018, we lost a loving wife and mother, faithful sister, caring friend, and devoted teacher. Sarah is survived by her two children, Matt Maines and wife, Shelli, of White Oak, Texas and Melissa Maines of Kilgore, Texas; grandchildren, Miller and Lawsyn Maines of White Oak, Texas; mother, Pearl Ethelene Bright of Natchitoches; sisters Beth Windham of Natchitoches and Rhonda Kuhlmann and husband Lee of Slidell. Sarah’s life was full of love and guided by the principles of teaching, service to others, and finding the good in all things. Sarah touched the lives of not only her family, but all those she impacted as a teacher, principal, and counselor at Overton, White Oak and Gladewater school districts throughout her 26 years in education.

William “Tommy” Maines

A remembrance and celebration service William Thomas “Tommy” Maines, 66, of Gladewater, Texas was held July 9 at White Oak Community Church in White Oak, Texas. On June 29, 2018, we lost a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, and thoughtful friend. Tommy is survived by his children, Matt Maines and wife, Shelli, of White Oak, Texas and Melissa Maines of Kilgore; grandchildren, Miller and Lawsyn Maines of White Oak, Texas; and sister, Rachael Gardiner of Natchitoches. Tommy was an avid hunter and fisherman who took joy in the simple things in life. He could normally be found in a pair of camouflage overalls talking up a storm with family and friends or outside training his hunting dog. Tommy spent over 40 years in the food distribution industry and worked for Brookshire’s, Sysco, Fresh Country, and B.B. Taylor.

Martinez to run for re-election as Zwolle mayor

Long-time Zwolle Mayor G.J. “Pie” Martinez has officially announced that he will run for re-election as the mayor of the town of Zwolle.

During his terms as mayor, Zwolle has seen a great deal of growth and he hopes to continue to improve the town through the coming years.
