FOOD STAMPS - BIG BUSINESS

By Pete Abington

The Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) is big business in Louisiana. One in five Louisiana residents it helps to feed. Marketa Waters, Secretary of the State Dept of Children and Family Services, stated that SNAP provides food aid to 400,000 Louisiana families. She said that is 860,000 of its most vulnerable residents - nearly 2/3rds of them elderly, disabled or children. She stated that many individual families cannot afford the cost of basic survival and “at $4.00 per day per person, SNAP can hardly cover the difference.” This comes to 20.2% of our population who live in poverty. The state spends $67.4 million to draw down $1.4 billion in 100% SNAP benefits to Louisiana families.

Patchwork

By Donna Smith Ammons

Recently, we had a power point presentation at church where church members recalled things their father said as they were growing up. It was kind of a words of wisdom program, that the congregation enjoyed. (Thanks to Laurie Gentry!)

I started thinking about things my parents said to me as they guided me through my younger and teen years. Seems like Mom was more vocal than Daddy, but it sure was fun walking down memory lane, remembering how they reminded me of important things!

--“Sit up straight!” (If I was slouching (heaven forbid), Mom would hit me in the back with her fist to straighten me up!) To this day, I sit up straight, even when driving!

Speaking Out for Louisiana Citizens

By Pete Abington

SUPREME COURT

The name of the new nominee for a seat on the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, was hardly spoken when Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, along with many others, started blasting with negative comments about this individual. The negativity is not expressed too politely in these United States today. It seems that the largest concern for the Democrats is that Roe vs. Wade could be revisited down the road and with Brett Kavanaugh on the Court, the vote could be tilted against this law. This seems to be a primary concern of the Democrats. Roe vs. Wade was decided some forty years ago. There are many more cases have been heard by the Supreme Court but the cases of Roe vs. Wade seems to really highlight the Democrats interest. They don’t want to flat out say abortion, but they want to say that they are in favor of women controlling their own bodies.
