Patchwork

By Donna Smith Ammons

Do people even iron anymore??

I can remember watching mother iron when I was a little girl. She would set up the ironing board and fill a green 7-Up bottle with water, and plug in a stopped with tiny holes, so she could sprinkle water on the item she was ironing. I was mesmerized about how she patiently pushed the iron back and forth to get a neatly pressed short.

I expressed so much interest in ironing that one day, she put me to work!! I sat on a high stool and she placed a stack of handkerchiefs in front of me. I ironed them and was ready for more. Next, she gave me a stack of cloth napkins. I was having so much fun that I think I would have ironed tea towels, sheets and more!!
