Every Christmas I start early wrapping presents. Early for me is about two weeks out. This year, I kept to my schedule, but discovered that I should have started much earlier. I got all of my wrapping paper out, bought extra tape and a few bags of pre-made bows. One of the upstairs rooms became my wrapping room.

This has been an unusual, different holiday in our home. The sons, their wives and three wonderful and active grandchildren came a week early to celebrate with us. Thankfully, we had a great time…eating in Natchitoches and seeing the Christmas lights with Paul and Lexie; celebrating Christmas with presents, a scrumptious ham dinner and then seeing the glory of Hodges Gardens’ lights and displays and Christmas on Main with Davy, Kt, Riley Kate, Braeden and Darby. When Braeden spotted Santa, he stopped and just looked at him. He turned and looked at his parents and then took off running right into Santa’s arms!! My heart was suddenly full of love and tears glistened in my eyes.

Merry Christmas! The 2015 Many Christmas Parade is just a memory. “Tis the Season in Sabineland brought joy and visitors to our parish. (Thanks to Chairman Gay Corley and Luminary Event Chairman Laurie Gentry and their committees).

As some know, I love ridiculous news stories. Well, one of the most ridiculous of the week not involving flags is the case of Woodland, North Carolina, where the town council rejected a proposal to rezone a section of land to manufacturing from residential/agricultural. The reasoning by the townspeople is what becomes funny. Resident Mary Hobbs told them that her property is now worth less, which is a reasonable concern.

In past years my cats have never really bothered the Christmas tree. This year is an entirely new ballgame! It seems like my other cats have actually enjoyed the Christmas tree. Bubbie liked to lay beneath the green branches and take naps. Tipsy was a little bit more adventurous. He’d crawl under the tree, lay on the packages and every once in a while bat the bulbs with his paw. Gibbs, who is now a seven-month-old kitten with a fetish for biting, is another story.

It’s that time of the year that we are being asked by our family members what we would like for Christmas. Truthfully, I do not want anything. For several years, I have been trying to downsize “stuff” and only keep things with a sentimental value.

I had to decorate my house, put the tree up and plan a menu for the Many Book Club’s Christmas Party at my home on Dec. 1. Needless to say, I was still tired from the boys and their families and preparing the Thanksgiving dinner. Two days prior to the party, I began cleaning house, decorating the mantle, hutch cabinet and stairway bannister before decorating the tree.

It is a miracle that my siblings and I were never once bitten by a snake. We usually went barefoot all over the fields and pastures that we called our territory. There were many places for snakes to hide. When we did run across a snake it was time for us to head back home. Because once you have seen one, every little rustle in the grass might be a snake.

The holidays have arrived and I have become irresponsible. My holiday shopping is not complete; all of our family Christmases have not been calendared; and I lost my cell phone just days before Thanksgiving.

A group of us were talking the other night about “the Good Ole Days”, when we were growing up in the 1950’s. Dean said he was riding home from town in the back of a pick-up truck, when he noticed his mother had purchased two feed sacks of flour. He said he knew right then that he and his twin brother, Dale, were going to have a new paisley shirt. Sure enough, several weeks later, they were sporting their new shirts to school.
