One of the best things about our recent Carnival cruise aboard the Conquest was meeting people. Hubby-dear and I are both “people persons” and he says that I would talk to anything that moves, including my cat. Not only do I talk to my cat, but he talks back!! There were plenty of opportunities to meet new people. The best though was in anytime-dining each evening. We enjoyed one dinner with a wrecker driver from Abbeville, and another with a couple who own the only bait/ gift/grocery on an Arkansas lake.

Speaking Out for Louisiana Citizens

The 5th Congressional District primary results showed why former Congressman Rodney Alexander changed from the Democratic Party to the Republican several years back. He could not have been re-elected otherwise. 68% of the primary vote went to the Republican candidates. The run-off will feature Sen. Neil Riser of Columbia and newcomer Vance McAllister of Swartz. They will be pointing up their conservative positions and tell how they differ on taxes, abortions, gay rights and gun rights. It will be popular for them to state who is most opposed to the Affordable Care Act and how they claim to be outsiders who would challenge the Washington establishment.

Our recent cruise on the Carnival Conquest was a trial of errors… not nearly as bad as last year’s Triumph chaos, but just a little confusing and inconvenient. Let me put this in perspective. I love to cruise and I realize that some things can’t be helped…and I do understand, but I am a person who plans things and I don’t like to re-arrange or postpone things. ‘Nuff said!!

For years, I have listened to local “friends” crow about LSU, coaches Nick Saban and Les Miles and how they always beat my alma mater, Ole Miss. Well it’s my turn…this is for you: Pete, Robert Dale, Donnie, Jim Lewis, Randy, Ted, Dean, Bob, Brian, Gary, Alwin, Bruce, Joe, George, Hat, Chuck, Matthew, Randy and Brad and anyone else who wears purple and gold on game days.

GED TEST

by Pete Abington.

The GED test will be replaced effective in January with a different test. A division of Educational Testing Service – called HiSET – will start administering its own high school equivalency test on English, math, science and other areas. In the past GED officials say 96 percent of employers accepted the GED certificate as an equal to a high school diploma, as did 95 percent of colleges and universities. An executive with Work Ready U, stated GED officials will offer a computer-only test.

EMPLOYEES Some 41,800 classified state employees received a 4% increase on their paychecks April 1st. This could be a onetime hit because money has not been appropriated for additional funds for these raises. The state authorized any agency that could scrape together enough money for future raises to do so. Now problems could arise from those who did not get raises.

I am going to have to set up camp at Walgreen’s some day soon. I have several disks from my camera that are in need of clearing off…by that I mean I have to go print copies of the shots I want. This may sound easy to some of you, but it is a major chore for me. One friend said she just emailed her film to the store and they printed them. Not so easy, because I am always making changes and editing each print….not once, but several times.
