Patchwork

by donna smith ammons

Spring arrived in February in Sabine Parish. All of the summer rain also arrived with a week’s downpour that flooded many parts of the parish. Over 18 inches was recorded in some parts of the parish. Sabineland was fortunate compared to heavy flooding and the loss of homes in nearby areas.

TAKE OVER SCHOOLS

by Pete Abington

It will be interesting tp watch this play out. For years many have questioned some of our leaders in the way they doled out money to our school system and other causes. The question is do they mean well or are they just keeping people poor and in need and dependent on free money rather than improve themselves.

At a recent seminar hubby-dear attended (and I got to go along) we had an exciting experience. He was sitting down to eat lunch and a young man said, “Oh, you are Donna’s husband.” He said he heard a woman screaming about her child in the hallway and he went to investigate. Seeing that the child was injured, he dialed 911.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

There was an interesting article a couple of weeks ago with a picture of the man with the fish he caught that weighed 13.15 pounds. It was caught near the dam on Toledo Bend. I cut it out to show my son when he comes on his next visit. In all his years of fishing, my husband never did catch one that large. Once he caught a bass that weighed 8 pounds and seven ounces. Our son talked him into having it mounted. It wasn’t easy for him to talk him into doing it as John had a reputation of being close with his money. But he gave in and had it done.

I love to travel…..by air, sea or vehicle. With that being said, I want to stress the point that I do not like being the navigator on these road trips. When traveling, I like to listen to the radio or read…….or sleep, according to hubby-dear. We mapped out a rather lengthy trip to Grapevine, Texas, near Dallas, recently, and wouldn’t you know, I had to “watch the blue dot inch along on the iPhone map” as we raced down the interstate.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

Way back in the early 1960s when driving to work I used to listen to the morning news on the car radio. There was  a lot of discussion about something called the Toledo Bend project. I knew it was a hot issue but I didn’t pay much attention to it. My husband said that he worked with a man who had property in the Hurricane Creek area. The man was opposed to the future lake as it would take in most of his land and he had a lot of neighbors that felt the same way. So when it came time to vote, John voted against it.

GRANDCHILDREN ALERT: If a Grammie can’t talk about her grandchildren then what’s wrong with this world?? Soccer for boys and girls in Zachary is now underway and PaPaw and I are busy trying to find a way to head south. Riley Kate and Braeden are both playing again this year and both are off to a great start!! Riley’s first game ended with a 9-0 score and she scored three of the goals. Those long legs take her up and down the field like greased lightning.

GULF STATION CAFÉ

by Pete Abington

The Gulf Station Café on San Antonio Avenue here in Many has recently opened. I speak of it because it brings back so many fond memories of my past since my boyhood home was right next door (where my office is now located). That old building has played many roles in my life. As I recall, it was built by Dr. A. B. Trammel to afford the opportunity to send his children to college. Originally, as I recall, it was a Sinclair Service Station. Eventually it changed to a Gulf Station and remained that way for many years.

Sometimes the hurrier I go, the behinder I get!! Remember that saying? It applied to me a few weeks back when I was making preparations to bake cookies for a night meeting. I went to the refrigerator and found three eggs!! Thank goodness I only needed two! I went about preparing the cookies for baking. So far so good.
