Patchwork

Hubby-dear and I moved to Cobb Drive in July 1983. We had been looking at a split level home at 260 Cobb Drive as we were expecting our first child. We had lived in a small home, known as The Honeymoon Cottage on Dillion Street. It was perfect for a newlywed couple, but not large enough for a full-fledged family!!

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

When I first began to think about this subject, I thought that I was immune to being superstitious. After giving it a lot of thought I guess I am guilty. Going way back I always tried to avoid the cracks on the sidewalks. When my siblings or friends and I were walking together, if we accidentally got separated for a few steps, we were quick to shout “bread and butter” to ensure that our friendship wasn’t severed.

Gibbs, my cat, is over a year old and he is a large cat. He has outgrown the biting stage (more or less--- Hubby dear says more and I say less.) One day last week, I was cleaning the panes in the back door as my final chore of the morning. All of a sudden I heard the most horrible screech and I turned toward the back yard. Here came Gibbs racing up the grass with a FOX, yes a fox fast on his heels. I did a double-take and then started running toward them. I started waving my arms and yelling and the fox maneuvered a sharp left and went behind the garage.

We have an actress in the family!! We traveled to Zachary last Wednesday to help with the new house, the one-year-old granddaughter, Darby, and to see our granddaughter, Riley Kate appear in a school musical. Hubby-dear spent the day helping at the new house and I played with Darby at home, while Davy and Kat were at work and Riley Kate and Braeden were at school. I think I was the only one exhausted comer 5 p.m.!!

I have discovered that I love to paint!! I don’t mean walls or old pieces of furniture needing a life….but paint with brushes on canvases!! I have never had much talent in that department, according to my eigth grade art teacher. He took one long look at an underwater painting I created and nodded, saying “That’s interesting.” Not very encouraging.

BE CAREFUL TRUMP

by Pete Abington

The former Secretary of Education William Bennett under Ronald Regan has a reputation as one of America’s most important, influential and respected voices on culture, political and educational issues. He expressed his views on a Trump presidency and it is interesting.. In his article he expressed that Trump is stepping on a lot of toes in Washington and it is effecting big bucks. People are now getting very nervous since he is getting so close to being president. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, he is talking of really upsetting Washington D.C. and they want to shut him up.

Patchwork

By Donna smith ammons

One day recently, hubby-dear came into the house and announced, “I just want you to know, there’s a three-foot long salt ‘n pepper king snake in the backyard!” “What?” I screeched. “Now don’t kill it because it’s a good snake,” he cautioned. In my book, a dead snake is a GOOD snake. I’ve proudly killed several snakes over the years. One was in the driveway and I chipped away with a shovel. Hubby-dear just shook his head and said an emergency room visit for a snake bite would have been cheaper than repairing the driveway. Another time I chopped up a snake he had been watching for months. It sunned down in the greenery near the pool. One day the snake made a deadly mistake. He raised his head when I was down this way…pretty soon he was in pieces. Sad hubbydear!!!

I have lived in Sabine Parish, specifically Many, since 1972. That’s 44 years this month!! This is the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere and is over half my life!! As a reminder I was a Marine Corps brat and our family moved every three years. When Daddy retired we settled in New Hampshire. However, Daddy moved us to the South, when he joined General Electric at the NASA Test Site near Picayune, Mississippi.

As a child I was programmed to sleep. I was put to bed early and I was up early for breakfast and school. When I was older, I still had a bedtime….even in the summertime. Little brother and I were in bed by 7 p.m. and it was still light outside!! We could hear our friends running around the neighborhood having fun. It was sheer torture to lay in our beds and try to sleep.

On Earth Day, Commit to the Great Turning

by Rivera Sun

Viewing the destruction of the planet and our natural systems as a form of violence, Campaign Nonviolence - a long-term movement to build a culture of nonviolence - engages people across the country in working toward sustainability, renewable energy, reducing meat consumption, supporting local food, and many other practices of living nonviolently on this beautiful Earth. As we commemorated Earth Day on April 22, we are called upon to recommit to protecting our planet to ensure that the human species and our fellow beings will have a long-term future. Founded in 1970, Earth Day is an internationally celebrated day, honoring the natural systems of the planet, and a day of action in support of climate protection. The commemoration was first proposed by two different people, peace activist John McConnell, who created the iconic Earth Flag, and Senator Gaylord Nelson.
