On Saturday, January 18, park staff will lead guests on a guided tour of the battlefield, visiting key points on the field where some of the most significant action of the battle occurred. The tour will depart the visitor’s center at 2:00 PM, and will involve outdoor walking of app. 1/2 - 3/4 mile. Appropriate footwear and clothing are recommended.

Mansfield State Historic Site is located at 15149 LA Highway 175, three miles south of the town of Mansfield, Louisiana.

The Northwestern State University family came together in grief following the tragic loss of alumna Carley McCord, a wellknown sports journalist and digital media reporter who was one of five people killed in a plane crash in Lafayette Saturday, Dec. 28. Friends remembered McCord as a remarkable and involved student who stayed in touch with her NSU family and was a devoted Demon supporter.

McCord, 30, earned a degree in journalism at NSU in 2011. As an undergraduate, she worked in NSU’s Recruiting Office for four years where she was a Student Ambassador and gave tours to prospective students.

“She was driven, energetic and was out to set the world on fire,” said Jana Lucky, NSU’s former director of Recruiting, now director of Enrollment Services. “Carley was very determined, but also kind and genuine. She was well-known in sports media throughout the state and always used the hashtag #womeninsports. She was a loyal Demon.”

Ebarb High School is pleased to announce their Students of the Year. Representing fifth grade is Dawson Neugent, while Grant Bartch is the eighth grade student chosen.

Each January, the Index takes several issues to provide a year in review for the events happening in the previous year. 2019 was a year of extreme elation for many, but times of mourning and reflection for others.

Three Sabine Parish men have been arrested in connection with the New Year’s Eve shooting death of a Pleasant Hill resident.

The men were arrested after an investigation by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office when Pleasant Hill Police Chief Ray Williams found Joshua T. Graves, 32, fatally shot in a vehicle on Hampton Street.

Dereginald L. King, 30, of Zwolle; Aaron J. Holmes, 25, of Pleasant Hill; and Jaydon J. Sepulvado, 19, of Zwolle; were each booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center on January 1 for allegedly taking part in the shooting death of Graves.

The Kings Chapel AME Church cordially invites all to attend their 25^th annual Martin Luther King Jr. march and celebration on January 20.

The march begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of East Alabama Street and MLK Drive. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Kings Chapel AME Church with this year’s special guest speaker, the Rev. Kecia Lewis.

The reverend is a native of Napoleonville and is a product of the Assumption Parish School System. She continued her education and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a concentration in family and youth advocacy from Nicholls State University.

WATCH OUR ECONOMY

We get caught up in the news about politics but we should never lose sight of what is really going on with our taxpayer dollars in Washington. Congress left town for a few weeks to wrap up the year and they spent a lot of money that bears watching. Before departure, lawmakers spent $1.4 trillion in discretionary spending for the rest of the fiscal year with little debate or objection. A bipartisan deal on the budget was supposed to give Congress time to negotiate 12 individual spending bills, but, as usual they couldn’t agree so they piled it all into two bills, totaling 2,300 pages on Monday. A day later they added a list of tax subsidies and by Friday it was law. Congress can act real fast when it is greasing its own wheels.

Our last camping trip with the Camping Cursillistas was to beautiful Lake Bruin on the Mississippi River, south of Vicksburg. It was in early November, when we loaded our campers and headed from Many, Slidell, Lake Charles, Haughton and beyond.

Usually, we camp at Indian Creek in Woodworth, but Judy and Irby Gamble invited us to camp on Lake Bruin, where they have a wonderful camp/home. (Gamble coached Tiger football in Many many years ago and hails from Marthaville.)

We all arrived at different times…. some in their usual campers and some in new ones. It was like old home week on the lake!! We took turns providing the evening suppers, but enjoyed eating inside two nights at the Gamble’s abode! Irby fried catfish one night and if we weren’t enough, they invited other nearby Cursillistas that we knew, so we could visit with old friends.

Northwestern State University recognized top graduates from the Gallaspy Family College of Education and Human Development, the Louisiana Scholars’ College and the College of Arts and Sciences prior to morning commencement exercises in Prather Coliseum. Graveside services honoring the life of Mrs. Annie Rae Nelson, 93, were held on December 26, 2019 at Lamberton Cemetery next door to the church on Shamrock Loop in Robeline. Officiating the service will be Rev. David Allen at Oasis of Love Fellowship with special music provided by Clayton Dyess of Marthaville.

Annie Rae Nelson was born on October 21, 1926 and departed this life into the arms of her Lord Jesus Christ at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, December 22, 2019.

She was raised with the teaching of the word until her passing.

Going ahead of her to welcome her was her husband, J.C. Nelson; sisters, Dessie Mae Holt and husband C.J. “Jack” and Elva Mae Paddie and husband Sonny Paddie.
