Ushering in Louisiana’s roaring 20s

The Roaring 20s were a time of unprecedented economic prosperity in America. A century has since passed. Can Louisiana and its oil and gas industry experience roaring economic prosperity once more?

Let’s take a look. One hundred years later, our nation’s economy is booming. Unemployment is at record lows, the stock market is at record highs, and it seems that everywhere you look, President Trump’s business acumen has acted like a shot of adrenaline for America.

Energy producers are no exception. Reforms of rules and regulations that had previously hindered industry growth have expanded offshore drilling, streamlined the pipeline permitting process, and made the United States an oil and gas powerhouse once again.

Several weeks ago, we hit a rough patch of losing our keys around the house.

Hubby-dear lost his first. We looked everywhere…..pants pockets, in coat pockets, under the furniture, in the Jeep, and all places in between.

He remembered leaving them on the table. We looked everywhere. He was sure the cat had knocked them off the table and they were somewhere on the floor, under chairs or the couch. We looked. No luck.

Sabine Chapter DAR recognizes Good Citizens

Recently announced and honored are DAR Good Citizens Nicholas Ebarb, Elizabeth Richwine, Ethan Penfield, Sarah Friday, Tori Townson, and Truly Bozeman pictured with DAR members Katie Lombardino, Leah Byles, and Gail Thomas.

The Sabine Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest in each parish school. This program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

Each school selects a senior who must have the following qualities:

--Dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality);

--Service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others);

Bond set for three accused Many High students

Bond has been set for three of the Many High School students who were previously charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of two fellow students.

On Thursday, February 27, Judge Stephen Beasley set bonds of $25,000 for Reginald Mitchell Jr., 17, and $50,000 for Keelan Williams, 17. Mitchell has been charged with accessory to sexual battery and Williams with second-degree kidnapping and sexual battery.

Bond has also been set at $50,000 for Quacie Kerlegon, 18, who is charged with second-degree kidnapping and sexual battery.

Choupique set for special concert this weekend

Choupique set for special concert this weekend

Noted Cajun and Zydeco group Choupique will perform this Saturday, March 7 in Many. Members of the band include Jesse Brown, Bill Grass, Kent Lavigne, Warren Thomassie, and Anglyn Brown.

History will be made at the Many Community Center on Saturday, March 7 , at 7 p.m. thanks to Choupique, a nationally recognized French Cajun Band, who will play a rambunctious, joyful Mardi Gras show that will have everyone dancing in the aisles.

Admission to the Mardi Gras show is absolutely free. That’s thanks to a grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.

The Louisiana-based Choupique Cajun Band has been playing together for 20 years. They have recorded three CDs and multiple singles. Choupique has played festivals throughout Louisiana and events all over the US. In 2018 and 2019,they represented the State of Louisiana as they toured New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, playing Acadian festivals, pubs, and Sainte-Anne University.

Hall sisters named 2020 Accomplishment Award winners

Siarah and Savannah Hall

Two lovely sisters, Siarah and Savannah Hall of Many have been named the recipients of the Accomplishment Award by the Sabine Hall of Fame.

The young ladies will be honored at the 22nd Sabine Hall of Fame Banquet on Tuesday, March 31 at Siloam Baptist Church located on Highway 191, south of Toledo Town.

Tickets are $50 each and may be purchased at Pete Abington’s Office on San Antonio Avenue, Nichols, Inc. and from Martha Henderson in Zwolle.

John Earl Martin

John Earl Martin was born on December 30, 1939, to Robert L. and Beulah Martin. He grew up in Natchitoches, Louisiana and graduated from Natchitoches High School and Northwestern State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. He worked in various fields, including serving as Chief Civil Deputy for Natchitoches Parish. He began his own real estate appraisal business from which he retired. John was an active member of Westside Baptist Church.

After a lengthy illness, he passed away surrounded by family at Christus Highland Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana on February 10, 2020.

Services honoring the life of Mr. Glen Edward Britt were held on February 11, 2020 at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Many Chapel with Britt Hayes officiating. Burial followed at Aimwell Cemetery in Zwolle. Glen was born September 4, 1952 in Zwolle to Mary Ann Blankenship and Willie Bennett Britt and he entered into rest on February 7, 2020 in Shreveport.

Patsy was born February 24, 1927 in Village Mills, Texas and entered into rest on February 11, 2020 in Many. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Patsy Ruth McCormick will be held 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Many Chapel with brother Ken Leach officiating. Her family will receive guests beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment for Mrs. McCormick will be immediately after her service at Florien Cemetery in Florien.

Preceding Patsy in death was her father, Lester Ray Jenkins; her mother, Dolly Lamar Hayes; and her stepmother, Gladys Jenkins. Those left behind to cherish her memories are her husband, Ralph D. McCormick of Many; son, Thomas McCormick and wife, Terri of Houston, Texas; daughter, Bonnie F. Sanderlin of Houston, Texas, daughter, Theresa A. Goldthorpe of Silver Spring, Maryland; along with 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Grand jury returns indictments on three cases

Sabine Parish District Attorney Don Burkett is pleased to report that the spring session of the Grand Jury met on February 6 and returned indictments on three cases.

Assistant District Attorney James S. Seaman presented the following cases:

Carlos Carhee was indicted on one count of second degree murder. He was arrested on November 5, 2019 for the murder of Chevallerious Winfield in Many. He is still incarcerated and will be arraigned on February 27 at 9 a.m.
