Patchwork

by donna smith ammons

Much to hubby-dear’s delight, the “exercise room” is set up and ready to go. I was not!! Finally, he got the television set up so I can watch “NCIS” with Leroy Jethro Gibbs aka Mark Harmon while I work out. Now let me start out by saying, I am not a fan of exercise. My feet and legs hurt when I walk too much and I can always find an excuse to sit and read instead of walk, do jumping jacks or sit-ups. Hubby-dear changed all of that with a new smart TV and our incumbent bike and a special chair for my armchair aerobics.

Patchwork

By donna smith ammons

Happy New Year and welcome to 2017!! While many are busy making New Year’s resolutions, I am busy trying to get my house back in orders! We had two big Christmas celebrations here and I am exhausted. Actually, I’d love just to go back to bed for about a week!! But, that’s not gonna happen!! I have given up making resolutions. Why bother, when I am breaking them as soon as I write them down. There have been years when I made silly promises to myself….like not going to the movies in my pajamas….or giving up snow skiing in July…or starting ….well never mind. You get the idea.

CONVICTION

By Pete Abington

Conviction goes a long way in obtaining accomplishments. As I sat in church this past Sunday this thought came to my mind about Paul and other great Christian leaders who had visions and convictions. They would blaze down the road to tell of Christ, not in a big fanfare, but just their conviction. As a young high school boy in Many I used to deliver groceries for the Jitney-Jungle Store, which was managed by Doug Curtis. There were no parking lots so we would travel all over town to deliver wherever someone had parked. Every once in a while I would notice a speaker on the corner talking his heart out – particularly making sermons. Some of the speakers were young men who had only been out of high school for a couple of years. They had no microphone or loud speaker. All they had was their voices speaking loud and their Bible explaining their point and they were preaching their heart out.

Patchwork

By donna smith ammons

Davy, Kt and the three grandchildren arrived last Friday for our family Christmas. They came in late that afternoon, loaded down with gifts, suitcases and lots of energy! Right off the bat, Braeden headed to the Christmas tree and started looking around. I’d decided to place a few unwrapped gifts between the presents as “teasers.” He immediately spotted a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and said, “That one’s for me!” “No, that’s mine!” his father declared. “I liked TMNT before you were even born!”

Remembering When. . .

By Lola Russell

Frank Stewart, who writes a column for bridge players, wrote something about Christmas that I thought was worth quoting. “Yuletide is upon us again. ‘Tis the season for family, church, and hope for peace on earth, some assembly required and batteries not included. It is also the season that we are busy writing and receiving cards. Among ones we receive there will probably be at least one or two of those letters that are copies sent to one and all with a history of what is happening in their lives. I have been guilty of doing the same thing. There are 26 members in my Sunday school class on the lake, and this year I do not have the time to write each one of them separately, so this morning I sat down and penned a greeting and sent it to the class. Someone will read it aloud. It is the best I could do. I am using my little desk address book to assure that I won’t forget someone, and so far I have only gotten through the g’s. I have a long way to go.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

I wish that I could get excited about Christmas like I used to. It would be so wonderful to feel that adrenal rush that was brought on by the anticipation of the happiest time of the year. I loved the shopping, the baking, the decorating of the windows and doors, the searching for a tree and trimming it and placing our treasured decorations on it. I also loved to wrap the presents.

Patchwork

by donna smith ammons

Christmas is just around the corner. Excitement is crackling in the air, as children look forward to the last day of school before Christmas break. The teachers are breathing a sigh of relief and looking forward to two weeks of vacation! Stores managers are listening for the clicking of the cash registers and Christmas music is playing on the radio. Moms are finalizing their Christmas menu—ham or turkey or both? Dad is outside putting up the Christmas lights and the kids are anxious to visit with Santa and attend the free movies at the Many Community Center.

Patchwork

By donna smith ammons

It’s no secret that I love celebrations and presents. From birthday parties to anniversaries and especially at Christmastime, I have the excitement comparable to a five-year-old child. Something about a gift wrapped up with pretty paper and bows, makes me nearly giddy!! Even now, I can remember Christmases and birthdays, celebrated with my family from ages ago. We were a Marine Corps family, so we were on a limited budget and we moved around to different bases every three years. I loved that kind of lifestyle. It afforded me many friendships, experiences and I got to travel.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

By Pete Abington

It is obvious that American wanted a change and the people stood up and overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump for president. Hillary Clinton said she wanted to keep things going just like President Obama but I guess the people looked around and studied the facts themself and felt otherwise. We have 95 million Americans who have dropped off the work force. Our gross national product has not grown 3% since Obama has been in office and many times it would run 3 to 4% each year. Wages have not increased and we don’t want our borders open and we want the people who are coming in to be vetted. Sure we have a lot of work ahead of us with the open border problem but we need to start now and not any later as it will get worse. Much work needs to be done and we must be patient. The left wing Democrats are going to be chomping every step of the way at the new leadership, but American overwhelmingly went against the doubletalking Democrats and they want a change.
