Patchwork

by Donna Smith Ammons

I have a sock drawer and it is so stuffed with socks---unmatched socks, I might add-- that it has reached the point that I must clean it out because I can never find a pair!!

I have decided it is just pure laziness that I don’t match my socks before I stuff them in the drawer.

Socks really get a bum wrap. Why is it that when you wash socks, one always disappears…only to be found six months later??

Social Security question answered

Dear Rusty: I am 66 years of age and have not yet claimed Social Security because I want to wait until I’m 70 and get the higher benefit. My wife, who is 68, is already collecting her benefits having started when she reached her full retirement age. One of my friends said that he had filed something called a Restricted Application a few years ago and was collecting spousal benefits now, but when I called my local Social Security office they said that the Restricted Application was no longer available. It just irks me that my friend can do this but I can’t. Have the rules actually changed? Signed: Unhappy about changing rules.

Patchwork

Lately, I have been so busy that I have forgotten to check my messages and emails. I opened up my emails earlier this week and much to my dismay, there were 564. I nearly choked!! I quickly began going down the list, deleting those ads—like the 16 apple vinegar ads. I cook with the stuff…I’m not going to start drinking it too!!

I am the Queen of 55 miles on my exercise bicycle!! In fact, for the past several nights, I have pedaled three miles straight, without a rest stop. I am encouraged by hubby-dear, who exercises with five nights a week in my exercise room/library. We watch NCIS with Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and believe me, seeing him on the big screen really helps!! In my mind, I am on an adventure. I’m almost to Alexandria (and I will be by the time you read this) and then I’ll be pedaling down I-49 toward Lafayette and then Youngsville to visit Paul and Lexie.

VOTER FRAUD INVESTIGATION

By Pete Abington

President Donald Trump announced there would be a national voter fraud investigation. This is probably a good idea. Whether there is or isn’t fraud, we frequently hear people discuss it. Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler says he takes all allegation of fraud very seriously. Louisiana did not have any widespread irregularities or allegations during the 2016 presidential election cycle. He stated that in addition to being a citizen of the United States, you are actually signing a legal affidavit creating an official public record stating you meet all the necessary requirements for you to vote. In addition, Louisiana has a trusted, election day photo ID law in our state that provides an additional level of security. He stated that the Register of Voters statewide are also required by law to revue, monitor, and update our voter registration list for accuracy.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

I suppose I can say that I hit “pay dirt” on Saturday. My daughter-in-law drove me down to my old home place to pick up some alterations that were ready for me. We had learned the night before that there would be a memorial service for the previous pastor of the church where I am still a member. We left early enough that we would arrive a little while before the services so that I could visit with friends and neighbors.

Something sparked my memory last week, that made me long for days of long ago. I recently read that Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus was ending their performances. How sad. Tears flooded my eyes. The 146-year-old circus, which traveled throughout the United States by train, was billed as “The Greatest Show on Earth”. It was then, back in the 1950s when I saw it with my cousin, Dawn, and her parents, Unkie and Aunt Pauline, and my Mom and Dad and little brother, Derek.

Remembering When. . .

by Lola Russell

Somehow or another, it took me a lot longer to get rested up from all the holiday activities this year. Maybe it is my age, although I did have five days of lots of being on the go and a break in my normal routine. I thought I may have an iron deficiency or one of those ailments and considered consulting Dr. Corley about it. The day that my son left for Austin and we had spent he morning of his last visit solving yet another New York Times crossword puzzle, I decided to skip lunch, called to tell them I would not be there, and leaned back all the way in my recliner, turned off the lamp and dropped off to sleep.

Patchwork

As I watch the Inauguration of President Donald J. Trump this morning (January 20, 2017), my mind drifts back to a day on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, when President-Elect Dwight D. Eisenhower came to visit. I was two-years-old and I knew that something big was about to happen!! We lived on the Marine Corps base, where Daddy was stationed. I had been told we were going to a parade. I went with Mom and Dad to the parade and saw long, black limos go by. I’m sure I wondered what was so special. Well, I would find out in a little while.
