No doubt you’re aware of what August brought to south Louisiana in terms of historic flooding. The water rose fast, destroying homes and cars. Thousands of people were displaced. At least 13 people died. Those of you in north Louisiana - and in other corners of Louisiana - know the August flooding is a bookend to what March wrought. March came in with a roar and torrential rain.

I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat!! It seems like I can never catch up on my sleep! Since I am retired, some friends have suggested that I take a nap during the day! Ha!! I run errands, attend meetings, visit mother, run by the Chamber office, make lunch and hopefully arrive home before hubby-dear comes home. When am I going to sleep??

I try very hard to make each of my grandchildren feel special. Of course, they are always special in my heart….and I love them each the same. With that said, my grandchildren don’t do the same!! The Facetime ring is put into action all the time from the Ammons’ home in Zachary to Cobb Drive in Many. Braeden has gotten pretty good about calling us or texting us from his iPad. Riley is always ready to talk and tell us about soccer, school or dance. Neither have any problem at all talking to us.

The power position has left former U.S. Senator David Vitter, therefore the Louisiana Republican Party overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to censure Republicans Jay Dardenne and Scott Angelle because they did not endorse Senator Vitter in his run for governor against John Bel Edwards last Fall. The vote was near unanimous. “As leaders in the Republican Party of Louisiana, we are obligated to fully support our party, platform and its candidates. Only in times of great crisis or betrayal is it necessary to publicly censure our leaders. Today, we are faced with both.” Tensions have continued to simmer among the parties since Edwards became the only Democratic governor in the Deep South. Under state law there is no way to formally kick someone out of a political party.

God bless Louisiana. Pray for Louisiana. It seems our state has been in the news a lot lately. Recently several policemen were killed in Baton Rouge and the city was in turmoil. Following a similar shooting in Dallas, a lone gunman targeted police before he was killed. It happened in our state’s capital too. People began praying. Churches help special services. We all wondered what the world was coming to. Just three weeks ago, the Great Flood of 2016 struck south Louisiana without warning. IT wasn’t even a hurricane that created flooding conditions from Lafayette to New Orleans.

Never before has a Republican candidate for president appealed to the African-American voters as Trump. Afro-American voters routinely give 90 to 93% of their vote to the Democrats. But, Trump questions, “What are you getting for it?” For fifty years this has been a solid vote for Democrats and every four years they voice the same complaints, the same injustices, the same racism, the same unfairness, and the same stacked deck. Look at black teenage unemployment, look at black adult unemployment. He asks, “What have you got to lose for voting for me? Because, how much worse can it get.” We know the poverty that the African-American community has faced and the lack of education. Are we really doing something to make it better?

For the past 10 days, hubby-dear and I have been on a treasure hunt!! Someone lost the keys to my new Traverse and can’t find them!! It’s understandable. I chauffeured him around for two weeks following his hip replacement surgery on July 12. We had been out to eat at the end of two weeks and he drove. He had already looked everywhere before he told me he couldn’t find them! Now, I was on a mission. I searched pants’ pockets, through the car, under the sets, in the closet, under the bed, in his chair, and everywhere I could think of. No luck. Besides not finding them, I was tired of looking.

As one writer stated several months he did not believe that discredited Hillary Clinton had a chance to be elected our next president. Now, things have changed because of some devastating comments made by Trump, as reported by the media. He has lost some of his earlier lead. This past week fifty prominent Republicans with foreign policy and national security experience announced they won’t support Donald Trump. Some feel that he is too reckless to be our president, as well as combative. Now he is beginning to respond and realize that some the various comments were perhaps incorrect. His recent apologies have been well received.

I have had a few embarrassing moments that I tried to forget but now I look back on them and am able to laugh about them. I was very timid as a child although you would not think so now. One thing comes to mind that occurred when I was in the first grade. A lady came to my mother with a large box containing used clothing that her children had outgrown. She was moving to another state and was packing as lightly as she could. We were very excited when mother began to take out the dresses with nametags on them. I had never owned a dress that wasn’t homemade by my mother or aunt.

It’a amazing how one little email can cause me to worry!! I got an email the other day from someone I don’t even know telling me “The meeting has been changed to today instead of tomorrow.” I quickly checked my calendar. I discovered I didn’t have a meeting either today or tomorrow. And then I began doubting myself. Did I forget to write down a meeting? Maybe someone forgot to inform me of a meeting.
