Funeral services for Elvis James Browning, 77, of Florien, were held on Wednesday, September 12 at Cenchrea Nazarene Church with the Reverends James Philen and Matt Warren officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. He was born on Friday, October 18, 1940 in Sabine Parish and passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 in Florien. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. Browning and Katie C. Browning; and sisters, Nelda Kay Nett and Eunice Knippers. He is survived by his wife, Betty Browning of Florien; sons, Terry Browning and wife, Brenda, of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Brad Browning and wife, Tonya, of Florien; grandchildren, Brady Browning, Colin Browning, Rachel Browning, Tanner Browning and Grace Browning; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Pallbearers were Brady Browning, Colin Browning, Tanner Browning, Colby Withers, Justin Sepulvado and Tye Thaxton.

It is with great sadness that the family of Frances Brandon Buvens announces her passing on September 14, 2018 at the age of 70. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on September 22 at First Baptist Church in Zwolle. The Rev. Jerry Penfield will officiate. The service will be under the direction of the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville. Frances was preceded in death by her father, Victor Brandon. She is survived by her mother, Joyce Clary Brandon; siblings, Dr. George Douglas Brandon and wife, Paula and Carolyn Brandon Basham; children, JoAnna Buvens Williams, and Lindsay Buvens Corley, and husband, Adam; grandchildren, Jakey P. Sepulvado, Blake S. Baker, and Katie Claire Corley. Frances graduated from Zwolle High School in Zwolle and attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper. Memorials may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.

Burial followed in the Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Many. She was born on September 17, 1943 in Jonesboro to Earl Henry Teagle and Robbie Della Smitherman, and entered into rest on September 11, 2018 at the age of 74. She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Herbert Ray Archer Sr.; and brothers, Kenneth Teagle and Bobby Teagle. She is survived by her sons, Scott Woods and wife, Mira, of Tomball, Texas, Herbert Ray Archer Jr. and wife, Kristi, of Needville, Texas, and Brad Archer and wife, Jennifer, of Montgomery, Texas; daughter, Terri Archer of Concan, Texas; sister, Jackie Wear and husband, J.N., of Reisel, Texas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services honoring the life of Shirley Matheline Gaspard were held September 12 at Spring Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Le Leaux officiating. Burial followed in the Spring Ridge Baptist Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. She was born on December 4, 1938 in Pleasant Hill to Norman Waddle and Ruth Woods Waddle, and entered into rest on September 8, 2018 at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Austin J. Gaspard; brothers, Norman Earl Waddle and Mickey Lynn Waddle; and sisters, Bernice Waddle and Sandra Louise Waddle. She is survived by her sons, Audie Gaspard and wife, Rhonda, of Kilgore, Texas and Austin W. Gaspard and wife, Shanna, of Many; daughter, Sandra Gaspard Sandifer of Montgomery; sisters, Jewell Peterson of Many, and Vickie Wyatt and husband, Donnie, of Branson, Missouri; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In an unprecedented move, Weyerhaeuser investing both in its business and Sabine Parish as a whole by entering into a partnership with Ja’Darius Williams, a 2018 Zwolle graduate.

Williams begins classes this fall at Oklahoma State University, where he will acquire a bachelor’s degree of technology in instrumentation engineering.

The agreement will provide funding for school and a paid internship at the mill, where he will work during summer break. Upon graduation, Williams has a guaranteed job at the Zwolle Weyerhaeuser site, where he will operate their newest, state of the art equipment and implement numerous upgrades to the facility.

Country music superstar Jerrod Neimann recently provided an almost unbelievable wedding proposal for local residents Jared Terrell and Kelsey Funderburk.

“I thought I was just going to a concert,” Funderburk explains. “I had no idea I was going to leave knowing that I’ll be marrying the love of my life.”

A video posted to YouTube shows the couple on stage, when the singer lets out a surprising statement.

“Well, he (Jared) thought he’d bring you up here and ask a special question,” Neimann says.

I nearly walked my legs off in New Orleans last month, while on a trip with friends.

We parked in a parking garage by Harrah’s at the end of Canal Street and then hopped on the trolley to the French Market.

We walked through the open air market, looking at all kinds of trinkets, carvings, silly hats and more. And then we walked through the stores in the French Market. I had to step in all the shops and look around. I found lots that I could buy, but refrained myself, since I knew I had a long way to carry my purchases.

I stayed in the toy store a while, looking at all the puppets and trying them out; pointing out books that my grandson would like; and reminiscing about all the old games we played as children.

WHERE’S THE LINE? Listening to our politicians talk, education is by far the priority. Looking at what is actually happening, it is nothing to be proud of. The overall well-being of children in Louisiana ranks next to last in the nation. This is based on the annual Kid’s Count report from the Annie B. Casey Foundation and it shows that things just might get worse. The report also showed the percentage of children who could be “under-counted” in the next census. This would make matters even worse as it would negate those people receiving funding for health, education and other assistance.

According to the study, 36% of the children under the age of five in Louisiana live in “hard to count” census tracts because of poverty, broken homes and other factors. The national average in that category is 23%.

Following a 29-20 win against Natchitoches Central in the jamboree, the Many Tigers are off to a great start by taking out the Peabody Warhorses 48- 14 before completely shutting out Marksville 49-0 to begin the regular season.

The game away at Peabody in Alexandria was a decisive win to start the season, with Shacori Collier, who is committed to playing football for Army, getting the first touchdown of the season on a 20-yard touchdown run. A successful point attempt by new kicker Hunter Lafollette put the score at 7-0.

Their next possession didn’t yield much, as it ended with a punt. However, the defense stepped up big, with a huge tackle by Tavier Wiliams put the quarterback six yards behind the line of scrimmage.
