Statewide election results finalized

With the 3,945 voting precincts in Louisiana reporting, there were a number of important runoffs and elections decided. In the gubernatorial race, Democrat John Bel Edwards and Republican David Vitter will square off in the runoff. Edwards received 40 percent of the popular vote, while Vitter received 23 percent. Scott An Angelle and “Jay” Dardenne were also represented with 19 and 15 percent of votes cast in their favor, respectively.

Barthelemy found guilty of first degree murder; Plea deal will keep him in prison for life

In Louisiana, first degree murder is loosely defined as the killing of a person with “specific intent” while committing certain crimes such as aggravated kidnapping. Robert Barthelemy, an Iraq veteran and former Natchitoches Police Department officer, was found guilty of that crime at around 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 15 following a week-long juried trial that provided some closure for a family who lost a son, brother, cousin, and father in Tony Procell. The jury deliberated for roughly two hours before the verdict.

Fires break out in Sabine Parish

On October 13, a fire broke out in the area of Prospect Road, Devil’s Branch, and Pilgrim Star in Florien. Within four minutes South Sabine Fire District was on the scene and aided by Central Sabine Fire District. The wind had blown from west to east, spreading the fire very quickly. Two abandoned homes were destroyed. Even though no one was hurt, the fire did force evacuations that afternoon. The firefighters were able to contain the fire with plowed lines and wetting the ground before the fire could spread to a third home. Several small hot spot fires continued throughout Tuesday night, but were under control.

Garcie to run for Police Juror

During the past four years, he has helped and improved the community, which is his main concern. In his first term, he has hard surfaced over 40 miles of dirt roads, overlaid many more and has plans to continue such progression

Peason horses face extermination if Army has way

A herd of around 450 wild horses that have lived free in central Louisiana are literally running for their lives. They are in danger of losing both their home where their herds have lived for 75 years and their very existence.

Amber Alert: York sought in missing six-year-old

The Louisiana State Police has issued a Level II Endangered/ Missing Child Media Advisory on behalf of the Harris County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office for a six-year-old child taken by Harvey Eugene York, Jr., of Zwolle, Louisiana. The child, Alexis “Lexi” Johnson, is a six-year-old white female with brown hair and brown eyes. She is approximately 3’7” tall and weighs 63 pounds.

Barthelemy trial begins; family seeks justice

The trial of Robert Barthelemy, a former Natchitoches Police Department officer accused of killing Tony Procell, a fellow Louisiana National Guardsman, began on October 9 with opening statements. The jury was chosen in weeks previous in St. Landry Parish, due to the general public of Sabine Parish having been exposed to details and publicity regarding case.

Balcony Grill to be first featured in new program

The Balcony Grill is the first business in the Cultural District of Many to receive a creative decal for their window that tells folks they can “Find many treasures” inside. Gregg Eason, the owner of the popular restaurant on San Antonio Avenue, displays a collection of fine art from area artists that is for sale. The art can be viewed in both the front and rear dining rooms. Eason was pleased to be selected to display the decal.
