Booker in running for La. Principal of year

Many High School Principal Norman Booker (center) is congratulated by Sabine Parish School Board Superintendent Dr. Sara Ebarb and Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Board Member Tony Davis on being named a semifinalist for Louisiana Principal of the Year. The winner will be announced at the 10th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration on July 15 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge.

Laurie DeWitt Morrow serves as Natchitoches Relay for Life spokesperson

Relay for Life is an annual event that brings communities together as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Businesses and organizations raise money prior to the event and set up stations with fun activities during the event. This year, Laurie DeWitt Morrow was named as spokeswoman for Relay for Life, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in October. I have the pleasure of working with her on a daily basis and her strength throughout the past months has been astounding.

Florien FFA to hold Mother’s Day sale

Hard work pays off, as the members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter at Florien High School have been laboring intensely in preparation of their annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale on May 6-7. Amy Green, agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor, stated that the majority of the plants began as small plugs in February before eventually exploding in color just before the big event.

City of Many tries to thwart Zika virus

In an effort to protect you and your family from the West Nile Virus, mosquitos that bite at night, and the Zika virus, the city of Many has sent employees to mosquito control classes. We were informed that the most effective way to protect you from mosquitos and the viruses they carry is to place pellets in creeks, streams and ditches or anywhere there is standing water. We will continue to spray at the ballparks, football fields, and throughout the neighborhoods. In addition to this, the water department will initiate a new effort to place larvacide pellets in standing water on public property and around your homes as meters are being read.

Bass Unlimited banquet named rousing success 14 years in

Cypress Bend Park Pavilion on the #1 B.A.S.S. fishing lake, Toledo Bend, was the setting for the fourteenth annual TBLA Bass Unlimited—Back A Great Fighter Banquet and Auction on April 15, 2016. The event, coordinated by Ned Goodeaux, marked the culmination of Toledo Bend Lake Association’s (TBLA’s) major fundraiser for projects to improve the Lake and benefit the surrounding community. More than 500 spirited TBLA members and lake supporters gathered to enjoy the warm weather, the barbeque dinner, visit with friends, drop tickets into drop boxes in hopes of winning prizes, and bid on silent and live auction items.

Local Easter Seals’ “Sabine’s Got Talent” boosts donations

The Sabine Parish Easter Seals’ committee came within $260 of reaching their $5,000 goal from “Sabine’s Got Talent,” according to Bernie Bitting, Director of Development for Louisiana Easter Seals in Shreveport. In year’s past, the local committee has sponsored a Jail ‘N Bail fundraiser. In order to involve more people and present an entertaining evening, the local committee hosted a talent show in the Many Community Center.

Susan Sands’ newest book published

Negreet High School graduate Susan Sands, daughter of Linda and Ray Noel, formerly of Noel’s Used Books, Barber Shop and Beauty Salon, now has a second book published and on sale. “Love, Alabama” is available for Kindle, Nook and in print. Last summer, her debut novel, “Again, Alabama” was published. A book signing at her parent’s store located on the Texas Highway, drew a large crowd of friends and family. In fact, she sold every book she had shipped home. Sands also had a book signing at Barnes and Noble in Shreveport.

Sheriff Dept. seeks stolen ATV

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking for information regarding the theft of a 2009 Honda Rancher four wheeler. The ATV was taken during the night of April 8 from Highway 120 in the Belmont community. It is red in color and has black rims.

Top pros on top bass lake in nation

It is going to be exciting as the Bassmaster Elite Series returns to Toledo Bend, May 12th-15th. The four day event will be at Cypress Bend Park located at 3462 Cypress Bend Drive in Many. Each day the public can watch the pros cast off at 6:20 a.m. and weigh in at 3:15 p.m. A field of 110 pros will fish Thursday and Friday. The group will be cut to 50 on Saturday, and the best 12 will battle it out on Sunday. Toledo Bend was named the number one bass lake in the nation by Bassmaster Magazine in June 2015. With 131 lunkers in the Toledo Bend Lake Association’s Lunker Bass Program as of April 2016, and spring tournament results for five fish hitting 34 pounds, it is going to be exciting to see what the best of the best will pull from Toledo Bend.
