TBLA holds poster unveiling, kickoff for Bass Unlimited

Artist Eddie Pastureau’s poster, “Toledo Bend Showdown,” is already a hit among TBLA Bass Unlimited—Back A Great Fighter poster collectors and the general public. His original artwork from which the poster was created and poster number one sold for big bucks at the Poster Unveiling and Auction held Thursday evening, April 7. The event kicked off Toledo Bend Lake Association’s 2016 Bass Unlimited—Back A Great Fighter fundraiser. All proceeds fund TBLA projects that improve the Lake and surrounding community.

FEMA states SBA loan is key to recovery

If you are one of the Louisiana flood and storm survivors referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), it’s important to complete and submit the loan application you receive to ensure that your disaster recovery process continues to move forward. Homeowners and renters who submit an SBA application, but who are not offered a loan may be considered for other FEMA grants.

Evening of talent to benefit local Easter Seals campaign

A line-up of talented children, teens and adults will be presented onstage at the Many Community Center on Friday night, April 15 at 6 p.m. for “Sabine’s Got Talent.” The competition in three age groups, (children, 5-12-years-old); (teens, 13-18-years old) and (adults, 19 and up) will highlight talents in group dance, single dancers and vocalists.

Conservation leaders meet

Conservation leaders, including district board members, met at the Louisiana Association of Conservation Districts Area I Meeting on March 8 at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Hall in Zwolle. LACD Area I is comprised of eight soil and water conservation districts (SWCD) representing the parishes of Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Lincoln, Ouachita, Sabine, Red River, and Union. Representatives from all eight districts were in attendance. The Sabine SWCD from Many hosted the meeting.

FEMA in Sabine, stresses registration

Renee Bafalis, media representative of FEMA, was in the INDEX office this week, and wanted to stress the importance of registering with FEMA after the floodwaters damaged numerous properties in Sabine Parish weeks ago. A recovery center has already been opened at 726 3rd St., Natchitoches, and another opened on April 6 at Many City Hall, located at 965 San Antonio Ave., Many. The offices are currently open from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Collier remembered as kind, hard-working gentleman

It seems that at some point in time, everyone came across Jimmie L. Collier. He was a beloved man, who was respected and admired by many. Collier died at Sabine Medical Center Tuesday evening, March 29 following what his family believes was a massive heart attack.

Curtis inducted into Sabine Hall of Fame

John Wallace Curtis, former owner of a chain of Big Star super markets and a third generation grocer, became the 19th inductee into the prestigious Sabine Hall of Fame Tuesday night, March 29 at the Life Church in Many. The Life Center was filled to capacity as family members, former employees and friends gathered to see Curtis and a number of others honored.

Sabine Police Jury under investigation

Two members of the Sabine Parish Police Jury were unhappy with things in their districts, and took it upon themselves to get the work done, despite it putting them on the wrong side of the state’s bid law, according to a legislative audit released last week. The audit states that jurors Randy Byrd and Ricky Sepulvado “directed road maintenance work totaling $378,682 without (1) obtaining the approval of the parish governing authority and involving the parish road manager as required by the PTA or (2) following state bid law.”

Service commission remains firm on Cleco decision

At the Louisiana Public Service Commission meeting on March 22, representatives from Cleco and Macquarie asked commissioners to rehear their case for the $4.9 billion takeover deal. The commissioners decided to hold a special two-hour meeting 1 p.m. Monday, March 28 to discuss the deal again.
