Students attend Boys, Girls State

A number of local students recently attended Boys’ and Girls’ State at Northwestern State University. The program was sponsored yearly by the American Legion, a veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. They are the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, and are committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring programs in the communities that advocate patriotism and honor while promoting strong national security.

DAR celebrates foundation of America through Constitution Week

There are two documents of paramount importance to American history: the Declaration of Independence, which forged our national identity, and the United States Constitution, which set forth the framework for the federal government that is still in use today. While Independence Day is a beloved national holiday, fewer people know about Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedoms central to our American way of life. This year, the annual celebration begins September 17.

The Sabine Index begins 137th year

The Sabine Index celebrated a historic 137 years on September 6. Your local newspaper is the oldest continually operating business in Sabine Parish. Throughout the years, The Index has had several competitors, including The Sabine Banner, which it purchased in 1921, absorbed and later revived as a free weekly. During its long history, the newspaper’s presence has been a staple of San Antonio Avenue in Many with offices first located at 990 San Antonio Ave. and Ash St. across from the current Many City Hall, with moves to 865 San Antonio Ave. in about 1931, 850 San Antonio in 1978, and, finally, to 875 San Antonio Ave. in late 2008.

Movies in Many to feature “mom” movies monthly

“Mom’s Morning Out” at the Many Community Center will begin on Thursday, October 6 From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A special free movie is planned to give moms throughout Sabine Parish take a break from the kids and housekeeping for a few hours, enjoy some time together and enjoy a good movie thanks to some generous sponsors.

Tax scam

Each year scammers continue to call their victims pretending to the IRS and bully them into paying a sum of money in order for them to not be arrested. This year, the scams have gotten a little more sophisticated. They will alter a phone number to reflect the local sheriff’s department. Kim Troutman of Many recently had this phone call, and decided to see how far were willing to take the call.

Father Tim sponsors Fiesta Poster

This year’s sponsor of the Tamale Fiesta poster is a well-known citizen and beloved priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Father Timothy C. Hurd, better known as “Father Tim,” said that he has sponsored this year’s poster in gratitude and recognition. He extends gratitude to his parents, who instilled a desire for learning and a passion for work; to the many teachers who shaped him and inspired him to teach; and finally, in gratitude to the people of Zwolle for 15 years of welcome. His sponsorship is likewise dedicated to the recognition of those who teach now, inspiring the youth and for those who sacrifice their time for others.
