Vines named 1st runner-up, LRHA Practitioner of the Year

Family Nurse Practitioner Melissa Vines of Sabine Medical Center’s Rural Health Clinic #1 in Many brought home  accolades to the local healthcare facility recently when she was named first runner-up to Rural Health Professional of the Year. Vines, joined the local clinic in 2007. FNP Melissa Vines Vines is the daughter of Harry and Elaine Branch and  graduated from Negreet High School in 1998. She earned a B.S. in nursing from Louisiana College in Pineville in 2003, and then earned her Master’s degree in nursing, becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches in 2007

Sheriff says officers respond to threat by Malmay

A 27-year-old Noble man is listed in critical condition at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport following a shoot-out in Ebarb with law enforcement officers on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16. Michael A. Malmay was initially transported to Desoto Regional Hospital in Mansfield by ambulance before being transported to LSU Medical Center following the late afternoon incident, according to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office.

President Kennedy: 50 years later

Special Assignments Fifty years ago this Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, the 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was gunned down in a motorcade traveling through Dealey Plaza in Dallas. He died a short time later at Parkland Memorial Hospital and entered into history as the fourth president to be assassinated.

NSU student killed in one-vehicle accident

A 20-year-old Northwestern State University student was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Saturday, Nov. 16 around 2:30 a.m. on La. Hwy. 474 near Florien, according to the La. State Police. Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers investigated at the scene. The victim, who was unrestrained, was identified as McKenna Sanders.

Cecile Lites, daughter named Christmas Grand Marshalls

Cecile Lites and her daughter, Ellen, have been named as Grand Marshalls of the Many Christmas Parade, according to the Parade Committee chaired by Gay Corley. This year’s parade will be hosted Saturday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m.

Texas man killed in crash near Converse

A 34-year-old Joaquin, Texas man was killed in a one-vehicle accident shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, according to the Louisiana State Police. Charles Edward Panell died at the scene of the fatal crash on La. Hwy. 174, east of Converse.

Shreveport teen sentenced in Tyrus Hall shooting death

A 19-year-old Shreveport teen was sentenced to five years in prison for the Jan. 5 shooting death of Tyrus Hall, 28, of Many. Sentencing was in the 11th Judicial District Court on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Judge Stephen Beasley handed down the sentence to Khelif Hicks during the hearing in the Sabine Parish Courthouse.

Jindal: Every day should be Veterans Day

A table for one was set for those POWs and MIAs not able to attend the annual Veterans Day service held at the Disable American Veterans building near Toledo Town.

Bobby Jindal’s message was simple. “Every day should be Veterans Day,” Jindal said as he addressed veterans and their families gathered at the 21st Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans building for their annual Veterans Day ceremony. “In the face of great peril, and asking for nothing in return, these courageous men and women put their lives on the line in the name of freedom.

Area Marines to celebrate 238th birthday, Nov. 10

The Toledo Bend Marines will be celebrating the 238th birthday of the United States Marine Corps with their annual gathering on Sunday, Nov. 10, according to former Marine Jim Pratt. The dinner will be hosted at the Toledo Center of the Sabine Council on Aging beginning with registration at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is $20 per person.

Heavy rains create flooding

Heavy rains throughout Sabine Parish and across the South created damages and flooding Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 30-31. Light showers through Wednesday turned into a heavy rainstorm in the night, complete with thunder and lightning. By daylight, citizens could see the flood waters, closing state highways and roads across the parish.
