Throughout the history of the United States, our country has fought many wars and has fought with their allies in several more. One of the longest and hardest fought wars involving the United States was the Vietnam War. During this lengthy war, over 58,000 American service men and women were killed with thousands wounded and crippled. The Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) and American forces in Vietnam were commanded by a very able and accomplished officer, General William C. Westmoreland.

Area 2 of Louisiana’s FFA Association held its Spring Career Development Events at Northwestern State University on March 9. Career Development Events (CDEs) are contests that are designed to centralize on student development by improving communication skills, encouraging academic growth, and helping them achieve success in competitive work environments.

The contests that took place at this event were Vet Science, Meat Identification, Poultry, Dairy Foods, Nursery/Landscape, and Floriculture. Teams from across Area 2 gathered to compete for a position in the State CDEs that took place on March 28 at Louisiana State University.

Bigfoot researcher Brandon Latimer, who has appeared on Destination America’s cryptozoology programs, and Hazel and Russell Dyess recently cast a bigfoot track that was 14 inches long and six inches side.

There were a total of four tracks with only one of them not being in the water. The cast they made was in pine straw lining the bank.

For Zach Birdwell, son of Hal and Bridgette Birdwell, these three stay wide-open all of the time, which is a good thing when it comes to be-ing a member of the 4-H. Zach who is only eleven years old and will be starting the 6th grade at our Mar-thaville Jr. High School has already started his own breeding program with his Nubian goats. The name of his farm is Beulah Land Farm.

Zach has perfect attendance so far this year in the Junior Louisi-ana Goat Association. On June 3 in Ruston, Zach won Overall Reserve Champion and Bayou Certified (La bred) Grand Champion with his farm baby Nubian buckling Beulah Land Farm Dasher. He also went on and won Division Grand and Bayou Certified Division Grand with his Pygmy doeling, Rose Rock Farms Lisa Marie.

In most communities there is one location that is special and very unique. Some communities have buildings, bridges, houses, creeks, and other unique items that pertain to that location. To the folks who live in Peason, we also have a landmark that is special to each and every one of us and is also of historic interest, Eagle Hill. Eagle Hill is the second highest point in the state, with Driskoll Mountain in North Louisiana being the highest point. At one time after all the timber had been harvested by Peavy Wilson Lumber Company, and you could see Eagle Hill looming on the horizon. Now with the timber having grown back around it, you can’t actually see the old hill from Hwy. 118 anymore, but you can know the exact location because you will see a very large and tall radio tower reaching skyward that is located right on the top of Eagle Hill.

Mickayla Reann Brown, of Pleasant Hill, LA, is slated to graduate from International Connections Academy on June 16, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Mickayla is the daughter of Shane “Hank” Brown and Kayla Brown of Pleasant Hill, LA, granddaughter of Mike and Betty Brown, of Marthaville, and the late Katherine Behan. Throughout her junior high and high school careers, Mickayla has participated in the sport of rodeo competing in the breakaway, team roping, barrel racing and pole bending events. She has had the opportunity to compete at both state and national levels. Mickayla travels throughout multiple states competing in various rodeo events and associations. One of her most recent accomplishments was winning the Josey Reunion Pole Bending 2017 Championship as seen in the picture below.

Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 80, Many Boy Scouts Ross Voorheis opened the Flag Retirement Ceremony with a welcome at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 27.

Held on the First United Methodist Church’s vacant lot, the Troop hosted an informative and dignified retiring of several American flags.

Look back to the days of the community outing, blankets on the ground, and games for everyone to play, as Mansfield State Historic Site hosts a Community Picnic Day from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 3. In conjunction with American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day and Great Outdoors Month, park staff and volunteers will present visitors with examples of what was commonly seen at a Victorian era picnic, and encourage visitors to take part in period games such as Town Ball. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch and make a day of it at the park! So come enjoy the games, walking trails, and family time!
