Reading is a gateway to other places, time periods, or even worlds. It’s also the springboard to success in school and beyond. Parents can inspire a life-long love of reading by encouraging and guiding their children, especially as they get older.

“The tween years are particularly important for developing a joy for reading,” says Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and creative lead at StoryArc Media. “Some children will naturally gravitate toward books and others tend to be reluctant readers. Parents are the key to providing ample opportunity and modeling the importance of reading. Experts agree that reading is a skill that will pay off throughout life.”

City Bank supports Louisiana Belles

City Bank is proud to provide a donation to the Louisiana Belles Softball team as they travel to South Carolina to participate in the World Championship.

Merrill, Bennet wed in June

Lacy A. Merrill and Daniel Bennett were married June 24, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Natchitoches with Pastor Cyle Clayton officiating. A reception followed at the Prud-homme-Rouquier House.

The bride is the daughter of Randy and Peggy Merrill of Monterey. The groom is the son of Travis and Darlene Bennett of Many. Lacy and Daniel are both graduates of Northwestern State University and the Graduate School of Banking at LSU. After their honey-moon in Jamaica, the couple will reside in Many.

Upward Bound kids tour Washington D.C.

Participants from Upward Bound Sabine recently toured Washington, D.C. Several places attended were The White House, U. S. Capitol, Smithsonian Institute, House of Representatives (Louisiana), Pentagon’s 9/11 Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and an illuminating tour featuring Lincoln, Washington and King Monuments.

Havens takes Toledo Bass Club’s July tournament

Well the dog days are here for sure making day fishing a little challenging, but the night guys beat the days anglers pretty bad this month, having the better results for sure. They had all had to fight thunderstorms Friday night to catch these big sacks but it paid off to get wet, as Zack Havens won first place with 19.96 pounds fishing midlake throwing soft plastics.

New Creation Ministries hold third annual banquet

New Creation Ministries Church in Zwolle recently held their third annual banquet on July 6, which serves as a huge fundraiser for the church.

Their New Creation Restoration Program is a six-to-twelve month residential discipleship program for men and women, and is supported 100 percent by donations to the church.

Cloverbuds hold last meeting of school year

On Friday, June 16, Sabine Parish 4-H Cloverbuds met at Hodges Gardens for the last meeting of this school year. Chris Pearce, Navy Britt, Connor Arthur and Chase Hopkins taught lessons on Animal Identification, Fish Identification, Fishing and Water Safety. Students went on a nature walk and spent some time fishing. Thank you to every-one who came and to those who presented.
