Bettie Jane Mitchell Hanson Dixon was born in Zwolle February 10, 1925. She went home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2017. She spent several years of her childhood in Louisiana, but eventually moved with her family to Houston, Texas. In August of 1944 she married a young Air Force Lieutenant named Halworth “Hollly” Noble Hanson from Holmen, Wisconsin. The following July the young couple welcomed their first child. They named her Karen Ann. In 1951, their second daughter was born in October—Kristi Lee. In 1988, Holly passed away in Pasadena, Texas. In December 1991, Bettie married Melvin Dixon and welcomed his children into her family. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle and Hobart Mitchell; brother, Hobart, Jr.; sister, Maurine; and brother-in-law, Frank White. She leaves behind her husband, Melvin C.

Funeral services honoring the life of William Edward Ryals, Sr., 67, were held October 24 at Lakeside Baptist Church in Converse with the Rev. Randy Parker officiating. Burial followed at Converse Cemetery in Converse. He was born November 14, 1949 to Laros and Marsha Keggley Ryals and entered into rest October 21, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Melonie Ryals Wiley; brothers, Jack Ryals and Tommy P. Ryals; sisters, Clara Ryals George, Marjorie Ryals Paul and Dorothy Ryals Gamlin; son-in-law, Edward Montz; father-in-law, Sherman Page and mother-in-law, Betty Page. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Betty Ann Page Ryals of Converse; sons, Eddy Ryals and wife, Shonda, and Chad Ryals and wife, Katherine, both of Converse; daughters, Angela Montz of Ponchatoula and Chrissy Ebarb and husband, Jason, of Converse; son-in-law, Craig Wiley Sr.

Funeral services for Gloria Jean Faircloth, 60, of Noble were held October 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Richard Norsworthy officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery. She was born Saturday, July 6, 1957 in Sabine Parish and passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017.She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Cartinez and Minnie Ola Cartinez; and husband, Jeff Faircloth.

William Henry “Mitch” Mitchell was born September 29, 1946 to E.C. and Lois Collins Mitchell, the youngest of seven children. He passed away at 71 at The Oaks in Shreveport on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from Alzheimer’s. He leaves behind an incredible legacy that included a big family. He married Nancy Raiford, the love of his life, 35 years ago and together they multiplied. Children include: Leslie Kroeger and husband, Chad, of Stuart, Florida; James and wife, Nina, of Franklin, Tennessee; Jonathan and wife, Karla, of Los Angeles, California; Joshua and wife, Hallie, of Franklin, Tennessee; Jarred of Nashville, Tennessee; Audra of Shreveport; Jordan of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Arianna of Shreveport; and three boys still at home Justus, Joel and Jaden of Bossier City. He was also a proud granddad to eight: Taylor and Jake Kroeger, Jameson and Siena Mitchell, Eli Mitchell and Caitlyn, and Lucy and Liam Mitchell.

On Veterans Day, Americans honor all American veterans, both living and dead for their sacrifices in protecting the greatest country in the world.

At exactly 11 a.m., each November 11, a color guard, made up of members from each of the military branches, renders honors to America’s war dead during a heart-moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.

The President or his representative places a wreath at the Tomb and a bugler sounds Taps. The balance of the ceremony, including a “Parade of Flags” by numerous veterans’ service organizations, takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater, adjacent to the Tomb.

Two very active ladies in the community, Evenlyn Newton Bush and Alma Stallworth Cross, who just happen to be best friends and work together on numerous projects, have been named honorary grand marshals of the Many Christmas Parade. The annual holiday parade will usher in the Christmas season on Saturday, December 9 at 3 p.m., with both ladies smiling and riding in the parade, behind Grand Marshal Georg Joe Boyens.

It will be a special day for all three honorees.

“Magical Christmas” is this year’s parade theme, according to Gay Corley, chairwoman and Many City councilwoman.

On Thursday, October 19 the 11- and 12-year-old Many Youth Football League team played their championship game in Natchitoches and came away victorious 13-6. Jeremiah James was chosen as Most Valuable Player. The team consists of players Christopher Williams, Christian Henderson, Cole Pickett, Sylvonte Aldredge, Joc Corley, Kendrick Gosey, Trevor McLendon, Rustin Morales, Omarious Davis, Hayden Evans, JaKorryen Smart, Lawson Lewing, Marquies Maxie, Javon Pathong, Owen Roe, Christian Barnes, Justyn Webb, Landry Wyatt, Jeremiah James, Swazy Carheel. The team’s head coach is Kevin Gosey, and he was assisted by Darnell Williams, Jeff Evans, and Dr. Jack Corley. Not pictured are teammates Jacob Scaife and JaMarious Smart.

A blue, turquoise and gold beaded bracelet will be the jewelry that students will create at the Happy Hours Jewelry Design class on Saturday afternoon, October 28, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Many Historic Depot Museum.

Talented jewelry designer Cheryl Pearsall, whose original jewelry is displayed at the Depot Art Guild, will instruct the class. Pearsall learned to make jewelry almost 20 years ago when she lived in Florida and worked at an upscale art gallery. She said she admired a beaded box, and the artist agreed to teach her how to make original items like the beaded box and jewelry from beads and wire.

November is Native American Heritage Month and the Choctaw Apache Tribe has planned their annual Veterans Pow-wow, Louisiana Native American Art Fest, Wild Game Cook Off, Homemade Sausage and I n d i a n Fry Bread Competitions, art and crafts contests and classes for artists, basket- making, beading and other Native American crafts.

The dates of November 3 and 4 have been selected for the Veterans POW Wow and Louisiana Native American Art Fest. The Wild game Cook-off will be held on Saturday during the art fest, along with the Homemade Sausage and Indian Fry Bread competitions.

Chief Thomas Rivers announced that Wild game Cookoff winner will be awarded a $250 cash prize. The tribe will provide $100 cash prizes for the Homemade Sausage and Indian Fry Bread winners, respectively. Dishes entered into the contest do not have to be prepared on site. Winners of the Art and Craft contest (adult and youth) will also receive cash prizes.

Despite non-ideal field conditions and several injuries, the Many Tigers performed admirably during their away game against the Lakeview Gators on October 20, sending a message to other teams that they are top dogs in 2-A.

Many kicked off to start the game against the Gators, who fielded a total of 17 athletes to the more than 70 Tigers that take the field weekly. The Gators had extreme problems moving the ball, and quickly found themselves without a ball.

A bad punt gave the Tigers the ball at their opponent’s 36 yard line, and were quickly in the red zone. A toss to Shacori Collier went nowhere as he slipped on the wet field. At fourth and two on the nine-yard line, Collier got a first down before the ball was punched in seconds later, putting the score up 6-0 after a missed point attempt.
