Funeral services honoring the life of Adam Lloyd Jeter, 34, of Zwolle were held December 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Zwolle with Father Richard Norsworthy officiating. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. He was born October 4, 1983 in Shreveport to Tommy and Kae Acklin Jeter, and entered into rest December 15, 2017 in Zwolle. Adam grew up with a strong love for his family, deer hunting, fishing, running dogs at the fox pen, and working in the hay fields with his dad and brothers. He was a very hard worker at any job he held and had a kind heart that would help anyone out in need. He enjoyed spending time with his nephews, nieces and special aunt, Brenda Sepulvado and family. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Nick and Winnie Acklin; and paternal grandparents, W.F. “Dub” and Mary Jeter.

District attorney worried by prisoner release

District Attorney Don Burkett recently contacted the Index, showing both alarm and worry with the number of prisoners being released early under a new plan, especially after the Louisiana Department of Corrections has not properly been tracking offenders, according to a state legislative auditor’s report.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor report, published in October, predated the state’s Justice Reinvestment Act, a reform that means to reduce the prison population of Louisiana by 10 percent, while saving more than $262 million in the next decade.

Thaxton commits to LSU-A Generals

Negreet Lady Indian standout Kelsey Thaxton has signed to continue both her basketball and scholastic careers at Louisiana State University – Alexandria (LSU-A) following graduation this year.

Bob Austin, in his fourth year of coaching the LSU-A generals, made the trip for the signing on November 9, which was noted by several Negreet High School administrators and coaches as being the first in a long, long time.

Depot ready for Christmas season

The Many historic Depot is all decked out for Santa’s official arrival in Many on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The Depot will also host several other events during the Town of Many’s Magical Christmas Festival.

Many and Sabine Parish residents will want to make a special visit to the Many Depot to view the beautiful decorations and special Christmas trees.

Interior designer Tom Dunigan of Houston, Texas, spent several weekends decorating the Depot and turning it into a Christmas home for Santa and families to visit during the holiday season. He brought in materials and workers from Houston, used Town of Many materials, and created a winter wonderland at the more than 100-year-old depot.

Christmas Parade honorees to be feted at reception

A pre-parade reception will be hosted at Many City Hall at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, according to Many Mayor Ken Freeman.

Parade honorees, including 2017 Grand Marshal Georg Joe Boyens, Honorary Grand Marshals Evelyn Bush and Alma Cross, Young Achievers, the World Series Champions, the Belles and the Ponytail softball teams of Sabine Parish, and Sabine’s Shining Star Brittney Garcie, will be feted. Former Grand Marshals are also invited.

Several local businesses will be providing finger foods and soft drinks. Donating the refreshments are The Altar, Many’s newest coffee and smoothie shop; Bayou Crawfish Restaurant, Market Basket and Gulf Station Café, and several others.

Christmas Gala is an NSU, Natchitoches tradition

The Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State University will present the 29th annual Christmas Gala November 29 – December 1 in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium. Performance times are 7 p.m. each evening with a 9 p.m. performance on December 1.

More than 300 Northwestern State students, faculty and staff in the School of Creative and Performing Arts combine their talents to present the Gala as a kickoff to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival. More than 10,000 people attend the Gala each year which is based on the long-running Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.

Gosh I sounded good!!

Recently I advised my daughter-in-law to “step out of the box”— “embrace a new adventure” and “live life to the fullest.” I told her not to live on “what ifs.”

I sounded so mature that I impressed myself. I was encouraging and strong.

I am a seasoned traveler—by vehicles, camper, train, ships and in the air—so I felt like I could shed some light on her impending adventure.

Garcie named Sabine’s Shining Star

A freshman nursing major at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches has been honored as the first recipient of the Sabine’s Shining Star award and will be introduced to the public in the Many Christmas Parade, according to Gay Corley, parade chairwoman.

Magical Christmas, this year’s parade theme, will be filled with floats, marching groups, the award-winning Many High Band and more, according to Corley. Miss Brittney Garcie will grace a float and be hailed as Sabine’s Shining Star, a teenager who has excelled in academics and extracurricular activities in the community.

Representative Howard proclaims National American Indian Heritage Month

On behalf of the Sabine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Louisiana Representative Frank A. Howard along with his secretary, Whitney Hart, proclaimed November 2017 as National American Indian Heritage Month and urge all citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities. This Proclamation will be presented to the Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb.
