David Wayne Mitchell

Funeral services for David Wayne Mitchell, 51, of Many were held February 15 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chester T. Kelly officiating. He was born Wednesday, November 16, 1966 in Shreveport, and passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 in Shreveport. Burial followed in the Ft. Jesup Cemetery. Deacon James R. Holmes, 72, died January 26, 2018 at Cook County Hospital, in Chicago, Illinois. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24 at Greater Wayside Temple COGIC in Many.

Virgie Mae Powell

Funeral services for Virgie Mae Powell, 90, of Robeline, will be held Wednesday February 21 at 10 a.m. at Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Waters officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Nazarene Cemetery. Visitation began Tuesday February 20 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many. She was born Wednesday, September 7, 1927 in Flora, and passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 in Robeline. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Powell and son, James Calvin Powell. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Diane Powell of Robeline; granddaughters, Rhonda Diane O’Brien of Robeline, and Kimberly Renay Haigh of Natchitoches; grandsons, Calvin Wayne O’Brien of Robeline, and Marvin Powell of Robeline; great grandchildren, Chassidy, Walter, Lucas, Kirsten, Jax, Lily, Eva, Kyra, Conner, Justin, Emma, Hannah, Michaela and Faith; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden, Addyson, Joedyn and Austin; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Judy Davis, 72, of Many were held February 17 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Lowe officiating. Burial followed in the Union Springs Cemetery. She was born on Monday, January 14, 1946 in Minden, and passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 in Shreveport. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Holiday Ailstock and Etoile Sutherlin Ailstock. She is survived by her husband, George Davis of Many; sons, Sammy J. McCormic of Many, Lee Davis and wife, Melody, of Elysian Fields, Texas and Wade Davis of Many; grandchildren, Trevor Spear, Alan Warfield, Alene Davis, Isaac Davis and Carson Davis; along with a host of family and friends. Katherine B. Carter

Katherine Carter, 89, was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to her family. She passed away peacefully at her home in Many on February 17, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on July 4, 1928. She moved to Baytown, Texas in 1952 where she resided for over 50 years. During that time she was employed for over 30 years at General Telephone Company. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Terry Glenn Rao; husband, James Carter; parents, Calvin Henry and Nina Elizabeth Banks Bowden; sister, Lorie Washburn; and brothers, Charlie Bowden and Max Bowden. She is survived by her daughters, Lynn Truxillo and husband, Nick, of Cat Spring, Texas and Susan Rao Hills and husband, Chris, of Many; stepson, Bob Rao and wife, Pat, of Lexington, Texas; brother, Calvin H. Bowden, Jr.

Floyd Giblin claimed by CTE; Sabine loses beloved citizen

Floyd Giblin moved to Many back in 1977, along with his wife, Susan Meadows Giblin, and their daughter, Amy, to help her father with the family business, Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Giblin was trained by Meadows, who had spent 30 years in the business. In 1978 the couple purchased the family business.

Today, Warren Meadows Funeral Home is a third-generation business, which continues to do things “the Warren Meadows” way.

Bassmaster bringing largest college fishing tournament to Toledo Bend

Bassmaster will launch its Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops and the Bassmaster High School Series presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods on Toledo Bend Lake this weekend.

The College Series tour will begin January 25-27 at the central qualifier on Toledo Bend, which was recently ranked fourth in the central division of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes for 2017.

Book nooks get boost from library

Books for everyone to read: That’s the joint goal of the Sabine Parish Library, the Many Cultural District Advisory Committee, and the town of Many.

The library donated several boxes of books last week to be used in the Many Book Nooks. They include most of the books by popular novelist John Grisham. They also include many other books the library is donating for the nooks.

New organization seeks to build youth

A new organization, “Together Standing Strong Making a Difference,” looks to use educational and outdoor recreational activities to build stronger youth as they grow into adulthood and become the leaders of tomorrow.

DeeDee Palmer of Many is one of several women, including her daughter, Krystal, and Patrice Jones, who have come together to offer the opportunity to the youth. They feel that providing a safe, clean and inviting environment to have fun and perform charitable services throughout the community.
