An employee of Walmart in Many for the past 30 years and one of the friendliest employees in the store, Patsy Rodrigues McLendon was named the Sabine Council on Aging’s Older Worker of the Year at the Year at the annual SCOA Fall Festival. Over 300 attendees applauded her as she graciously accepted the award.

It was no surprise that she captured the coveted award.

Four amendments on weekend ballot

Voters throughout the state will be asked to decide on four proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution on the October 12 ballot. This year’s lineup is especially challenging, as the PAR guide to the four amendments in question call them “among the more arcane proposals citizens have faced yet.” The guide, available for free at www.parlouisiana.org, was used extensively in compiling this information.

Amendment 1: Offshore Goods Property Tax Exemption

Currently, businesses and homeowners pay property tax to local governments based on the assessed value of their property on an annual basis. The Constitution allows certain exceptions, such as homestead exemptions for homeowners and the Industrial Tax Exemption Program for manufacturers.

The Zwolle Tamale Fiesta is upon us and will be held at the Zwolle Festival Grounds throughout the latter part of this week and weekend. As is tradition at the festival, each year a King and First Lady are chosen from the many residents of Zwolle to serve as royalty for the festival and many auxiliary events that build up to the big event in the weeks before.

Pat Rivers

“I wasn’t sure about the honor at first,” said Pat Rivers on being named King. “I’m not one who likes being out in front of everything, but it’s going to be fun so I got excited.”

Speaking Out for Louisiana Citizens

Speaking Out for Louisiana Citizens

THIS DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR

As expected, but not quite so soon, President Trump endorsed GOP challengers Ralph Abramson and Eddie Rispone last Tuesday and popped Governor Edwards on the chin. It had previously been said by The Advocate D. C. correspondent, Elizabeth Crisp, that Edwards was Trump’s “favorite Democrat”. But that proved not true. No question. But with some of the recent developments by Eddie Rispone it is feared that over 50% of the votes slightly might go to Edwards and Republicans don’t want to take a chance. In addition, Republicans have a large stockpile of cash to be spent and they decided not to wait any longer.

A 30 second spot was recently released hitting Edwards for his hiring of Johnny Anderson, who was previously accused of special harassment. You can expect Edwards to hit back and he has $3.2 million in the bank to back him up.

Patchwork

I understand that cool weather is on the way to the South. I’ll believe it when I feel it! A friend messaged me about a GUMBO ALERT for this week!! Really??

It seems like summer has lasted forever. Now, don’t get me wrong….I like summer because of the laid back days of day dreaming, swimming, vacationing, no schedules, and all the great summertime foods…watermelon, tomatoes, corn on the cobb, etc. (Anyone ready for a last minute picnic?)

But Autumn offers so much, too…….the parish fair and cotton candy, the leaves turning to brilliant colors, chilly nights, hayrides, Halloween and Thanksgiving, haunted houses, and bonfires. The best, though, is a crackling fire in the fireplace with a good movie on the television or a good book in my hand, or apple cider and roasted peanuts as we watch the Saints.

The Many Tigers didn’t look like their old selves during the season opener against the Union Parish Farmers on September 8, losing the game by a wide margin of 34-18, a rarity for the high-powered Tigers.

Of course, you can factor in that the 2-A Tigers were playing up to the 3-A Farmers, but that has not stopped them before. Union found most of its success via junior quarterback Trent Ginn, who went 3/7 passing for 89 yards and a touchdown, but also made up the bulk of their running attack, with 12 carries for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

Indeed, Union put up two touchdowns before the Tiger’s Zequarrius “Cadillac” Rhone got into the end zone from the 11-yard line.
