Janice Napier

Janice Napier, 74, of Pineland, Texas passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill.

Janice was born July 11, 1945 in Belmont, Louisiana to James Madison Grantham and Retha Berry Grantham. She was a resident of Belmont before moving to Pineland in 1963.

Janice had earned her PhD in Nursing and worked as a Family Nurse Practioner for Baylor College of Medicine. She had previously been the Company Nurse for Temple Industries for 15 years and had also worked for Lufkin Memorial Hospital and CHI.

Janice was of the Baptist faith and she was a member of Rosevine Missionary Baptist Church. She was a wonderful pianist and she and her husband, John, often sang together in church.

Funeral services for Gerald Wayne Thaxton, 79, of Florien were on October 14, 2019 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Bignar, Rev. Danny Forsythe and Rev. Dean Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Middlecreek Cemetery.

Gerald Wayne Thaxton was born on Friday, February 16, 1940 in Florien. He passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019 in Alexandria. Gerald was a faithful member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a carpenter in earlier years, as well as a retired poultry grower and cattleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evon and Vernie (Weldon) Thaxton and brother-in-law, Elvis Browning.

Funeral services for Alma Lurline Edwards, 97, of Pleasant Hill, were held on October 9, 2019 at Spring Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Leach, Sr. officiating. Burial followed in the Spring Ridge Cemetery. Alma Lurline Edwards was born on Sunday, September 24, 1922 in Pleasant Hill. She passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019 in Natchitoches. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Ponder and Kate (Lane) Ponder; husband, Bill Edwards; and son, Lennis Edwards. Alma left Pleasant Hill at a young age and moved to Midland, Texas. She met and later married Bill Edwards and they had two sons and raised their family in Houston, Texas. Later in life she and Bill moved back to Pleasant Hill to live on the family farm.

Bobby Sherwood passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019 at the age of 78. He was a native of Port Arthur, Texas and a resident of Kenner, Louisiana. Beloved husband of the late Joyce Ann Gonsuran Sherwood, father of Christopher Lynn Sherwood, Mark Anthony and Jeffery Allan Sherwood. Grandfather of Melanie Bienvenu, Daniel Allan Sherwood (Candace) and Justin Michael Sherwood. Great grandfather of Camryn Sherwood, Tristyn Sherwood, Sloane Bienvenu and Graedon Bienvenu. Son of the late Aline Cates Sherwood and Samuel L. Sherwood. Brother of the late Samuel Maurice Sherwood.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Warren Meadows Funeral Home, 355 Capitol St., Many, LA on Sunday, October 13, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Services for Mr. Roy Noble Wiley, 82, were held on October 2, 2019 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana with Dr. Chad Hardbarger and Bro. Harry Forrester officiating. Burial followed at Bayou Scie Cemetery in Zwolle.

Roy was born December 26, 1936 to Lee Roy and Bessie Louiser Simpson Wiley. Roy went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2019 and to be reunited with the love of his life Barbara Wiley who has waited on him since September 30, 2015. He served our country in the U.S. Army. He was also a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was always giving of himself and his time though yard work and removing stumps for the church.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, Ross Murphy passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 82. Ross was born on November 1,1936 in Many to Cleveland and Lavera Murphy. He earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics from Northwestern State College in 1959. He served his country honorably as 1st Lt. In the U.S. Army. He was dedicated in his career as an Aerospace Engineer, supporting the NASA Space Program in Houston, Texas. He retired in 2002 to farm life raising cattle.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnnie Lee Rhodes were held on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Many Chapel; interment followed in The Ft. Jessup Cemetery in Ft. Jessup. Johnnie was born February 10, 1930 in Many to Vernon Fred Flenniken and Laura (Simpson) Flenniken and entered into rest on October 4, 2019.

Preceding Johnnie in death were her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Fred Flenniken (Laura Simpson); husband, Mr. Elmer A. Rhodes; brothers, Homer Flenniken, Gerald Flenniken. Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Benny Ray Rhodes & wife, Linda of Bossier City; sons, Donald DeWayne Rhodes & wife, Lynne of Minden, Louisiana, Darren Scott Rhodes of Ft. Jesup; daughter, Rosalind Moreau of Florien; 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren, and 11 great, great grandchildren.

Honoring Johnnie as pallbearers were Joey Grappe, D. J. Rhodes, Chad Rhodes, Jeff Rhodes, Michael Self, and Lance Grappe.

John Rivers was born on Monday, May 16, 1938 in Zwolle. He passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Sabine Medical Center in Many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Kate (Ebarb) Rivers; brothers, James Carson Rivers and Jimmy Rivers; infant sister, Mary Rivers; great granddaughter, IzaBella Kate Nigreville; and great grandson, Memphis Kolt Sepulvado.

Funeral services for Stanley Patrick Pilcher were held on September 23, 2019 at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Many, Louisiana. Officiating the service were Brother Hayward Hossler and Brother Kenny Carter. Stanley was born October 6, 1950 in Converse to Henry Lester Pilcher and Esther (Lopez) Pilcher and entered into rest on September 20, 2019. He served honorably in the United States Army.

Stanley was active during the Vietnam War and was discharged honorably with several commendations and recommendations. These recognitions included the following: National Defense Service Medal,

Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Combat and Infantry Badge.
