John Whittle

John Vernon Whittle was born July 8, 1931 in Montgomery, Alabama. He died on Aug. 15, 2015 at 12:12 p.m. related to complications of Alzheimer’s in Bossier at the Northwest Louisiana War Veteran Home. He was preceded in death by wives, Marian “Mickie,” and daughter of Mickie, Sharma Stephens, and Jean L. Stivender. He is survived by sisters, Claudia and Mary of Florida; son, Don Whittle and wife, Gaylyn, of Toledo Bend; daughter, Debbie Sands and husband, Mark, of Delaware, Ohio; former wife, Ingeborg Mehr, of Germany; step-children, Jerry, David and Jenine Stephens; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. At the young age of 16, John was so eager to serve his country, he fibbed about his age just to get enlisted. He was stationed at Camp Polk (Fort Polk), but served overseas in many different countries. During his two tours of the Vietnam War he earned the Bronze Star, and after 25 dedicated years of service, he retired in 1974 from Ft. Hood and moved to Arlington, Texas.

Michael Callender

Michael Wayne Callender, 65 of Urania, passed away Aug. 9, 2015. Funeral services were held at Aug. 14, in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers in Jena, officiated by Bros. Johnnie Phillips, pastor of First Baptist Church in Olla and Dean Johnson of Old Pisgah Baptist Church in Marthaville. Burial followed at Urania Cemetery in Urania. Mike Callender was born in Urania on Sept. 2, 1949. He was married to Marilyn Cooper Callender for 46 years. He worked in the plywood industry for 30 plus years. Mike enjoyed quality time with his family, especially sitting around on the porch drinking coffee and sharing stories and hanging out with his little Yorkie, Suzie. Mike is survived by his wife Marilyn Cooper Callender, daughter, Jennifer Callender Brown of Ruston; sons, Houston Doyle Callender and wife, Paula, of Pleasant Hill and Kevin B.

Violet Self

Memorial services for Violet Joy Self, 93, of Orange, Texas were held Aug. 15, at the Kingdom Hall-Jehovah’s Witness, in Many. A private family burial will be held at a later date, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville. Violet, the daughter of Joseph Stanton and Addie Ellis Stanton, Sr., and was born on Feb. 16, 1922, in Orange, Texas. She passed away on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, in Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two grandchildren. She is survived by her children, John El Self and wife, Iris, of Whitehouse, Texas, Rebecca Elaine Self Ellis and husband, John, of Port Arthur, Texas, James Carlton Self and wife, Karen, of Anacoco, Samuel Eliot Self of Groves, Texas, Joseph David Self and wife, Becky, of Orange, Texas and Katherine Self of Silsbee, Texas; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Jane was born on June 18, 1944 in Pineland, Texas. She entered into eternal rest on July 27, 2015 in San Bernardino, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Albertteen Miller; son, Ramon Sepulvado; daughter, Angela Sepulvado and sister, Norma Manning.

Victor Anders

Funeral services for Victor Lee Anders, 78, of Robeline, were held on Aug. 12 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Robeline, with the Reverends Brian Adamson and Truman Leach officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Robeline. Victor Lee Anders was born on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1936 in Sabine Parish. He passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 at Many Health Care North in Many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Susie Russell Anders; sons, Ronald Charles Anders and Joseph Victor Anders; step-daughter, Denise Durley and step-sons, Tracy Arron Durley and Horace Jefferson Durley, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Liz Anders of Robeline; daughters, Cathy Martin and Dorothy Khan both of Longview, Texas; sisters, Eloise Potter of Many, Peggy Anders Sneed of Many and Sandra Anders Stewart of Florien; brothers, James “Sap” Anders and Earl Anders, both of Many; 23 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Services for I.B. Malone, 90 were held Aug. 15 at the Friendship Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Daniel Lowe and Deacon Mike Sullivan officiating. Interment followed at the Friendship Church of the Nazarene cemetery. Mr. Malone was born on May 24, 1925, in Ball and passed away on Aug. 12, 2015 at Many Health Care North in Many. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Dryden Malone; first wife, Audrey Stewart Malone; second wife, Josephine Moore Malone and brother, Huey Malone. Mr. Malone was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Mr. Malone served the people of Many and surrounding areas as a self-employed plumber and electrician. He was a faithful member of the Friendship Church of the Nazarene, serving as a board member for many years. After his marriage to Mrs. Josephine, he also attended St. John’s Catholic Church of Many.
