Seventeen members of the United Methodist Women compose the active group at Many’s First United Methodist Church of Many. The ladies gathered together Sunday Sunday, January 24 at 10 a.m. to celebrate their accomplishments and activities.

UMW Vice President Carolyn Dove served as Liturgist and led the services. Those participating in the service included Special Recognition and President Vicki Isgitt, Organist Gail Thomas, Ushers Karen Lombard and Vicki Simpson, UMW Ribbons Mary Ellen Freeman and granddaughter, Charlotte; Stewardship Moment Chris Nolen, and Soloist Vicki Weaver.

Following announcements, hymns and prayers, Mrs. Dove introduced guest speaker, Janis Anthony of Zwolle’s Methodist Church. Anthony grew up in Sabine Parish and graduated from Negreet High School. She earned a B.S. degree from Northwestern State University and a MBA from Cal State-Stanislaus.

Congratulations to the Sabine Parish District and School Level Teachers of the Year. The teachers were selected by their schools for their dedication and commitment to the students, school, and community. The winners will move forward and represent Sabine in the state competition.

The Teachers of the Year are elementary teacher Brittany Bashara of Zwolle Elementary School, middle school teacher Krisha Williams of Many Junior High School, and high school teacher Kristy Steele of Zwolle High School.

School level winners of the award are:

Congratulations are in order to Sabine Parish’s 2020-2021 Students of the Year. Being named as such and headed to represent our district at the regional levels are fifth grader Jensen Ebarb of Zwolle Elementary School, eighth grader Kierstyn Williams of Many Junior High School, and 12^th grader Emma McElwee of Many High School.

The Students of the Year Awards Program is designed to recognize outstanding elementary, middle, and high school programs. It is patterned after the Teachers of the Year program and stands as an excellent opportunity to recognize students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership abilities, and citizenship.

In order to be selected as a Student of the Year, the student must earn a cumulative 3.1 grade point average and be enrolled in grades five, eight, or twelve.

Nine male students kidnapped and raped another student at Many High School, according to a federal lawsuit submitted Thursday in the Western District of Louisiana.

Numerous allegations were made in the 45-page document filed by the stepmother and child’s father.

Named as defendants in the case are the town of Many, Mayor Ken Freeman, the Many police chief and some of his officers, the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office and some deputies, Sabine Parish District Attorney Don Burkett and his office; and the Sabine Parish School Board and some school district employees; including two coaches.

Ebarb High School is proud of their students, and extremely pleased with this year’s choice for Homecoming Court.

Representing the Freshmen class is Paisleigh Elese Rivers. Paisleigh is the 15 year old daughter of Roger andRita Rivers. She is a member of FFA, 4-H, LA Gear Up, and the Lady Rebels Basketball team. Paisleigh attends St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Representing the Freshmen class is Airyonna Faye Shepherd. Airyonna is the 15 year old daughter of Anthony and Stacy Shepherd. She is a member of FFA, LA Gear Up, the Lady Rebels Basketball team, and the Rebel Cheer Squad. Airyonna attends Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

(The Center Square) – The Louisiana Workforce Commission distributed almost $54.8 million in federal pandemic benefits to almost 180,000 state residents during the first two weeks of the program, the LWC says.

Federal pandemic unemployment compensation provides an additional $300 per week on top of regular state unemployment benefits. Congress and President Donald Trump approved the program during the closing days of last year, and the Workforce Commission began distributing FPUC funds Jan. 4.

Across all programs, the Workforce Commission has distributed more than $166 million in unemployment benefits since the beginning of this year.

Louisiana has doled out a total of around $7 billion in unemployment benefits since the COVID-19 pandemic began, mostly federal dollars. While federal relief has helped to prop up the nation’s economy, the programs have proven to be tempting targets for fraud.

The parish and state itself saw a great number of candidates qualify for the March 20 election.

Qualifying for BESE District 4 were Republican Shelly McFarland, Republican Michael Melerine, Independent John Milkovich, Democrat Emma Shepard, Cody Whitaker (no political party chosen), and Democrat “Cassie” Williams.

Choosing to run for office as the Sabine Parish Police Jury is a field of all Republicans. They are Joseph A. Hendon, Truman Nichols, Dewayne “Porkchop” Rains, Jeff D. Scaife, Michael “Mike” Smith, Stephen M. Steinke, and Christopher M. Sylvia.

Students, faculty and staff are teaming up to bring the Northwestern State University campus to the world of Minecraft.

Jayce Gentry, president of the NSU Gamer’s Guild, a student organization made of people who enjoy playing a variety of video and card games, explains that Minecraft is a PC game where you can build anything you want.

“Think of it like Legos but in a video game,” said Gentry, a junior computer information systems major with a concentration in cyber security from Belmont.

“The game got a huge spike in popularity around 2012 and is now one of the most popular games of all time. Tons of people play it to build anything from skyscrapers to pirate ships or anything else they can come up with.”
