Martinez named oldest logger

“I’ve been in the logging business my entire life,” G.J. “Pie” Martinez says proudly. His words ring true, as his career as a logging contractor, which spans over 40 years, has caused him to be named the Zwolle Loggers and Forestry Festival’s oldest logger. To be given the prestigious title, one must be 70 years of age or older and have had an impressive career in Sabine Parish’s number one industry.

Auctioneer Kevin McDonald kept the crowd excited and bidding throughout the auction. Two original wood carvings were sold during the evening—one eagle and this LSU Mike the Tiger, pictured with its new owner, Jarrod Romero of Lafayette, who won the bidding at $4,500. Both carvings are over 4’ tall.

Boise to invest $43 million at Florien site

On April 9, Governor Bobby Jindal and Boise Cascade’s Mike Brown, wood products operations manager, announced the
company will make a $43 million capital investment to upgrade and increase the capacity of its Florien plywood mill located
in Louisiana’s Northwest Region.

The event will mark the culmination of TBLA’s annual major fundraising event to earn money for projects to improve the quality of the Lake and amenities surrounding it.

Battle of Pleasant Hill to be commemorated

A number of re-enactors, sutlers, and other vendors will be on hand at The Battle of Pleasant Hill this weekend. The event be-gins with a school day on Friday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The fol-lowing day will feature a parade at 10 a.m., re-enactment in the town at 11 a.m. and the main re-enactment at 2 p.m.

TBLA unveils poster

Artist Noah Bounds’s poster, “Could Be a Lunker,” is already a hit among TBLA Bass Unlimited poster collectors and the general public. His original artwork from which the poster was created and the poster numbered one sold for big bucks at the Poster Unveiling and Auc-tion held last Thursday evening, April 2.
