SCOA signs up 142 new seniors at membership drive, open house

Flamingoes, palm trees, other tropical decorations and leis were the order of the day on Thursday, June 18 at the Legacy Building, Sabine Council on Ag-ing. The staff was celebrating their open house and member-ship drive. All staffers were dec-orated in bright colors and some even had mumus on. Everyone had brightly colored leis and sounds of “Aloha” could be heard around the meeting room, as re-freshments were enjoyed.

Negreet author debuts first novel

The digital release of a new novel, Again, Alabama, a debut novel by Susan Noel Sands, a Negreet High graduate in 1985, was Friday, June 12. The book will be released on August 26 and available at area bookstores and at her parents’ business, Noel’s Barber Shop and Used Books on the Texas Highway.

Deaths tied to community

The untimely deaths of two men—one in Lafayette and another in Tennessee—were reported within a two-day span. Pat GutteryOn Saturday, June 20, Pat-rick Denis “Pat” Guttery, 49, of Ba-ton Rouge, died while on vacation in Gatlinburg, Tennessee with his wife, Stephani and their five chil-dren. Mrs. Guttery is the daughter of Frank and Nelda Ebarb of Many.

Toledo Bend named number one bass lake in country

It took 25 years but through the efforts of many individu-als and several organizations, but Toledo Bend Reservoir has reached its crowning glory with Bassmaster Magazine’s an-nouncement last week that it has been named the number one Bass Fishing Lake in the Nation in its annual selection process of the Top 100 Lakes in the U.S.

TBLA, Chamber of Commerce team up for trash pickup

The 2015 Sabine Parish Roadside Trash Pick-Up on Sat-urday, June 13, sponsored by the Sabine Chamber of Commerce and the Toledo Bend Lake Asso-ciation (TBLA), was a great suc-cess! Two groups of volunteers were ready to tackle the roads, but heavy rain caused a cancella-tion of the clean-up effort in the town of Many.

Deer vandalizes Nichols

On June 9, a deer broke into Nichols Department in Wright’s Shopping Center during the night. Store employees found the animal inside the store when they arrived early in the morning the next day. The deer was eventually herded out the back door  y employees and police officers. Apparently both deer hunters and deer shop at Nichols.

Many Community Center to celebrate Juneteenth

The annual Juneteenth Festival will feature the award-winning film “SELMA” at the Many Community Center on Saturday, June 20, 7 p.m. The annual gospel singing for the Juneteenth Festival will also be at the Many Community Center. It begins at 6p.m. on Friday, June 19. Admission to both events is free. “SELMA” is the story of the civil rights movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. “SELMA” tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history

Transportation is key element in assisting local senior citizens

One of the key elements in making sure that Sabine Parish senior citizens are able to make appointmentsand have the necessary   ransportation is the Sabine Councilon Aging’s Transportation Dept., according to Executive Director Tammy Mangum. Serving as Transportation Coordinator is Tiffany Jones of Many, who has been employed by the SCOA for the past two years. Jones has a big job filled with coordination of appointments, scheduling drivers and making sure that all seniors  ver the age of 60 years are served. Four drivers are always ready to ensure that senior citizens get to and from their appointments in a

Kathy R. Lang expires June 15

Kathy Ramsey Lang, wife of local pharmacist Robby Lang of Many, lost her lengthy battle  ith cancer, early Monday morning, June 15. She was in her early 60s.  he had been undergoing treatments for a number ofmonths and was home at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband; two children, Callie Lang Killingsworth and Colby Lang, both of Many; one sister and one grandson.
