Back-to-School Rally distributes supplies to 275 students

The annual Sabine Parish Backto- School Rally was very successful on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Fairgrounds, according to Many Gore of the Toledo Bend Ministries. Gore and her team of committee members, including Elyda Thaxton, the Rev. Harry Babers, the Rev. Elaine Burleigh, Lisa Henderson, Virginia Burkett and Donna Smith Ammons worked to make this the best ever. They were pleased with Saturday’s results. “We distributed 275 bags of school supplies to students in grades Pre-K through high school,” she said. “We had a new routine to follow and it seemed to work out well.”

Dahlem dreams big; lands prestigious job

Growing up, Hannah Dahlem was a quiet studious child. The fourth of six children born to Jerry and Susan Dahlem, formerly of Many, Hannah was home-schooled along with her brothers and sisters, Zach, Jessica, Nathan, Rachel and Ben. On Aug. 30, she will begin a career in the business world, in a large city, hundreds of miles away from her family, who now lives in Bossier City.

Labor of love complete, Ezernack reminisces over “Mathilda”

The love affair between a person and their car, whether Dodge, Chevy, or any other brand in between is immense, but for Cindy Ezernack of Zwolle, the love between her and a Ford Mustang means something much more meaningful. The story begins when Ezernack was a young high school student. Through a number of unfortunate familial events, she was living with her grandmother and working during a summer break.

Investigations yield felony theft, burglary arrests

On July 11, Pleasant Hill Police Officer Stuart Anthony received a call reporting a burglary on Texas Street in Pleasant Hill. Also responding was Police Chief Ray Williams. Upon arrival, the owner stated that as he returned home, he noticed a window air conditioning unit moved and items missing from the residence. A witness provided information to officers and two suspects were quickly arrested. The investigation also revealed that another residence ad been burglarized in the same area.

Back-to-School Rally scheduled for Saturday

The annual Back-to-School Rally will be hosted at the SabineParish Fairgrounds on Saturday,   ug. 1, with the gates opening at  7 a.m., according to Chairman Mary Gore of Toledo Bend Ministries. The opening ceremonies and program, which will feature guest speaker, Judge Elizabeth  Pickett of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, begins at 8 a.m. Student testimonies and music will also be featured in the program

Winchester brings enthusiasm to job

Power Plant fire creates outages

Workers from Swepco and CLECO were on hand Tuesday morning, July 21, to work at the power plant, located within the city limits of Many on the Natchitoches Highway. A fire at the plant in the early morning hours created a huge outage in Sabine Parish. (Photo by The Sabine Index/Debbie Rose) Between 70 and 80 percent of the homes in Sabine Parish were without electricity in the early morning hours of Tuesday morning, July 21, according to volunteer firemen from Many’s District I Fire Station.

Ingrid Cook honored by MORE magazine

By Donna Smith Ammons Special Assignments Ingrid Guay Cook, a 1987 graduate of Many High School, achieved  national recognition recently whenshe was one of five working women  across America chosen to be featured in MORE magazine’s July/August 2015 issue. Cook was one of the Impact  Award winners, who was featured in an eight-page spread in the magazine. She has a full-page photo of her self and the other honorees, including Barbara Bush, daughter of former President and Mrs. George W. Bush, CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps of New York  City; Anita Jones-Mueller, President and founder of Healthy Dining, San Diego; Darlene Oliver, Executive Director of Public Allies of Chicago and Celeste Bodner, Founder and executive director of Foster Club of Seaside, Oregon

Malette sentenced to 90 years hard labor

On July 15, Judge E. Joseph Bleich, Ad Hoc, imposed upon Darrell K. Mallette a sentence of 90 years at hard labor for molestation of a juvenile under the age of 13. Bleich gave written reasons in support of this sentence in a 39-page document.

Donated supplies needed for Back-to-School Rally, Aug. 1

A large number of school children will report for the first day of school without the needed supplies. There are a number of reasons why they don’t have their supplies: parents could be unemployed; too many children in the family to provide the needed supplies for each child; etc.
