Hodges Gardens remains open

After months of waiting to see if Hodges Gardens State Park, also known as The Garden in the Forest, would be closed or remain open, the Friends of Hodges can celebrate. The over-50-year-old park is home to wildlife, beautiful gardens, a magnificent forest of Southern pines, an ampitheater and lake. The Gardens are open to the public for a small fee.

Many Cultural District further beautified

New wrought iron railings installed on San Antonio Avenue are providing a much-needed makeover for the downtown shopping area of Many. The iron railings replace some wobbly aluminum railings that will be removed because they were both unsightly and did not provide support for shoppers and people doing business on San Antonio Avenue.

Green Market open Saturdays

It’s summer and nothing tastes better than fresh, locally grown produce and vegetables. Homemade pies and jellies and jams are great too. The Town of Many and the Many Cultural District have established a Saturday morning Farmer’s Market at the Many Historic Depot every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. where people can buy locally grown vegetables, fruits, and homemade baked goods.

Commissioner Holloway considers future

Signaling the potential end of a public career that first took root during the Reagan era when he was elected as the first Republican to represent the-then Eighth Congressional District, Louisiana Public Service Chairman Clyde Holloway, acknowledged that he may not seek re-election later this Fall as a result of on going health concerns.

Good neighbors assist Hodges Gardens

Sometimes it takes a village or a group of interested folks to get things done. Such was the case recently at Hodges Gardens State Park. The donation of a new motor by Packaging Corporation of America in Deridder and the electrical work by Dennis Downs of Florien has resulted in the return of the huge blast of water from the Willow Point Fountain at Hodges Gardens, south of Florien.

Local actress lands lead role for Shreveport Little Theatre’s “Gypsy”

Florien native Tessa Anderson, daughter of Debbie and Mike Anderson, will appear onstage at the Shreveport Little Theatre in the title role of Gypsy Rose Lee in the popular musical, “Gypsy.” The play, referred to as “the greatest American musical,” was introduced on Broadway in 1959 and made it to the big screen in 1962. Revived on Broadway in 1974, the musical follows the dream of a mother raising two young daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life.

Award winning “Movies in Many” returns

Movies in Many is up and running once again, offering free movies to the people of Many, Sabine Parish, and the surrounding area. The popular project of the Town of Many and the Many Cultural District will begin its summer schedule on July 9. “The Wannabes” ,an independent movie, had its world premiere at the Many Community Center on June 25. That well-attended event also marked the official reopening of Movies in Many.

“Wannabes” premieres in Many

A large crowd of over 160 attended the World Premiere of “The Wannabes”, a film written, produced and directed by Phillip Wade of Farmerville, in the Many Community Center Saturday night, June 25. A line began forming when the box office opened at 5:30 p.m. and prior to the showing of the movie on the center’s new motorized screen, actor  Den Crittenden, Wade and Mary Brocato, chairwoman of the Many Cultural District, addressed the crowd, until almost 7 p.m. Many Mayor Ken Freeman welcomed the crowd.

New vet joins Many Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Natalie Cormier of Lafayette has joined the practice of Many Veterinary Hospital, located on the Texas Highway, effective June 1. The new vet was home schooled, completing her studies in 2008. She attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, for three years, where she studied all of the prerequisite courses for veterinary school. An honor student, she applied to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge and was accepted in 2012.
