Wannabes readies for opening night

“The Wannabes,” an independent film featuring local cast members and extras, will have its world premiere at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, at the Many Community Center. Sponsored by the Town of Many and the Many Cultural District, the movie will show for a second time on Saturday, July 9. Admission to The Wannabes is $5 at the theater box office.

50-year memorial honors fallen Vietnam soldier

Friends and family of J.C. “Jakey” Walker commemorated the 50th anniversary of his death on June 5 with a patriotic program of singing and sharing memories of his boyhood and military service. Dennis and Vickie Wright hosted the memorial at their home, which overlooks Toledo Bend Lake in the Walkerville community, a few miles from where Walker grew up with his parents, brothers, and sisters. His surviving siblings are Betty Oxley of Negreet, Bobbie Wynn of Hemphill, Texas; Benny Walker of Milam, Texas; Sarah Pilcher of Zwolle and Donnie Walker of Coushatta.

Juneteenth, Black Heritage Festival set for this weekend

Juneteenth is a special commemoration for many, as it commemorates a monumental achievement in the freedom of all people in the United States. Knowing this, a group of dedicated citizens plan and hold a black history and Juneteenth festival to which all are invited.

Movies in Many returns with world premiere of “The Wannabes”

Saturday, June 25, will be a big day in Many. It marks the grand reopening of Movies in Many at the Many Community Center, old Sabine Theater with the world premiere of “The Wannabes,” an independent movie shot in Sabine Parish. It has been six months since the movie screen at the Many Community Center was damaged beyond repair. Ken Freeman, the Mayor of Many, his staff and members of the Many Cultural District searched for solutions so Movies in Many could resume. After unsuccessful attempts to repair the old screen, they began searching for an affordable replacement.

Poppies distributed for Memorial Day

Poppies were distributed at Family Farm and Garden on Memorial Day, May 30, by the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 172 and the attendees of 76th session Boys’ and Girls’ State from June 26- July 2. The poppies were not sold, but given for donations.

Memorial service to mark 50 years since death of local Vietnam soldier

A memorial service will be hosted at the home of Vickie and Dennis Wright on Sunday, June 5 at 3 p.m. in honor of PFC J.C. Walker Jr., who was killed in action in Vietnam on August 25, 1966. The gathering, which marks 50 years since his death, will be held at 285 Big Pine Road in Many and all family and friends are invited. Golf cart transportation will be available. In case of rain, the service will be held at Siloam Baptist Church.
