Women in the Workforce” training provided at NWLTC

Why does a college graduate with a degree in Psychology need CPR training? And what does a gal working in retail sales have in common with a cosmetologist? Well, if they are students in the “Women in the Workforce” program at Northwest Louisiana Technical College—Sabine Valley Campus, these young ladies have a lot in common. Not only are they classmates, but they are also being trained for more skilled, better-paying jobs. They are young women with an eye on their future.

Back-to-School Rally set for this Saturday

The Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church of Many will be the location of this year’s Back-to-School Rally, according to Mary Gore of Toledo Bend Baptist Missions. Gore has chaired the group of volunteers for a number of years. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. Those attending are encouraged to park in front of the Center and enter through the front door, in order to register and pick up school supplies. A short program will precede the distribution of supplies. A welcome will be delivered by the Rev. Harry Babers of Zwolle’s Tabernacle of Love, followed by a welcome to the new location by the Rev. Bo Horne, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Many Mayor Ken Freeman, who has supported the effort for a number of years, will also be on hand with a welcome from the city. Savannah Lee will say a prayer and the Mistress of Ceremonies will be Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Elizabeth Pickett.

Sabine schools show growth via test results

The Sabine Parish School District increased the number of students in grades three through eight scoring at or above the proficient level on state science tests based on scores released by the Louisiana Department of Education this week. “We are committed to supporting improvements in science instruction across our district, to ensure that all our children have access to high quality science instruction,” said Superintendent Sara Ebarb. “We are very proud of our schools, our students, our teachers, and staff for their hard work and sincere dedication to improving teaching and learning for all children in Sabine Parish.

Daughter of MHS grad abducted, shot; fighting for life in UM Medical Center

Kelly Kiper Longoria, 22, of Winnsboro, remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. The young woman, who has been married for 13 months, was to begin graduate school at the University of Louisiana at Monroe this fall. She graduated in December with a degree in speech language pathology and was looking forward to continuing her education. Her husband, Shane Longoria, is a youth pastor of Life Church in Winnsboro.

Governor asks slain officers be honored

On July 18, Gov. John Bel Edwards ordered the flags of the United States and the state of Louisiana to be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol and all public buildings in Louisiana until sunset on Monday, July 25 to honor the lives of the six law enforcement officers who were shot in Baton Rouge this past Sunday, three of whom were killed: Baton Rouge Police Officers Matthew Gerald and Montrell Jackson, and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Garafola. “These courageous men are heroes in the truest sense of the word,” said Gov. Edwards.

Cleco to face possible problems

The Court of Appeal, Third Circuit, in Lake Charles, issued a ruling last week against Cleco in its efforts to stall a lawsuit filed by Gulf Coast Spinning. The suit alleges Cleco made initial promises to GCS that went by the wayside, once negotiations with Macquarie entered the picture. The ruling against Cleco could have far-reaching effects and its customers could be left holding the bag. GCS filed the suit against Cleco in September 2015 for not fulfilling promises toward the construction and creation of a cotton mill in Bunkie.

Vandalized cemetery angers resident

Local resident Lisa Butler does not appreciate the vandalism to Monk Cemetery, which is located off of Lone Star Road. She was told by neighbors that two or three people in the community cut several huge cedar trees down in the past, but they have rested on the ground amongst the graves for years. “If that wasn’t bad enough, they piled limbs all over the graves,” she said. “There is a grave marker for Jesse Butler, who was killed in World War I. They knocked it over and just left it lying there.
