Hopkins Memorial Show set for January 27

A “Remembering Rod” Memorial Show will be hosted at the Many Community Center at 7 p.m. on Friday night, January 27, according to his widow, Mrs. Frances Hopkins. The Legends Band, which supported the ArkLaTex Music Show for 15-plus years, will be on stage with a variety of former talents who appeared monthly on Hopkins’ show. Hopkins’ children and grandchildren will also be performing, as a tribute to their late father and grandfather.

“Sabine’s Got Talent” fundraising competition seeks sponsorships

Easterseals Louisiana is seeking sponsors for it’s upcoming “Sabine’s Got Talent” fundraiser, featuring a talent show for the ages, currently set for March 3 at the Many Community Center/Sabine Theater. School Board releases early childhood performance profile

As part of the 2012 Act 3 law, known as the Early Childhood Education Act, Sabine Parish Universal Preschool entered a state pilot program and eventually became the Lead Agency for the Sabine Parish Early Childhood Network. As the lead agency for the Sabine Early Childhood Network, the agency has worked diligently to establish a uniform standard of readiness for kindergarten. The lead agency partners with day care programs in the parish that receive Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) funds as well as Head Start and both LA4/8g state early childhood programs. Statewide, all lead agencies will now receive a performance profile based on individual site profiles within the parish.

Williams recalls 1953 inauguration

Bobby Williams of Florien recalled the excitement of inauguration day in 1953, which he witnessed while attending Officer School in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. “In the fall of 1952 I had returned from overseas and was stationed near Washington, D.C.,” he stated.

Slater receives scholarship

Crystal Slater is wellknown at Northwest Louisiana Technical College – Sabine Valley for excelling in her program and being highly involved on campus. Crystal is a native of Florien, and has been a valued member of the NWLTC since the Fall of 2015 serving as a student worker and Student Government Association president. In December, she was ecstatic to see the following in her email: “Congratulations. The Horatio Alger Association is pleased to inform you of your selection as a 2017 Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholar.” While Crystal is no stranger to receiving well-deserved honors as a student, this one is offered to only 510 students nationwide and has a maximum value of $2,500 That covers her tuition, fees, and supplies while completing her Associate’s Degree in Business Office Administration.

Index offers review of 2016

At the beginning of every New Year, the Sabine Index uses its first two issues to review the previous year and the many stories that have graced its pages. January A number of local youth attended the National Catholic Youth Conference, which is a three-day event for catholic youth across America. The teens from St. Joseph of Zwolle and St. Ann in Ebarb joined over 25,000 other teens. According to the story, there were 91 attendees from Zwolle.

Boyd slated to speak at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observance

The Kings Chapel AMEC pastor and church family cordially invite all to attend the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. March and celebration on January 16. The march will begin at 10 a.m. at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and East Alabama St. Attendees will then march to Kings Chapel AMEC where the program will begin at 11 a.m.
