Fiesta Pageant awards titles, trophies

The Tamale Fiesta Pageant, staged on the Festival Grounds in the activities building was hosted Saturday, August 19 at 2 p.m. with a large crowd attending.

By afternoon’s end, Many High junior Lillian Elizabeth La-Tour was waving to the crowd after she was crowned 2017 Miss Tamale Fiesta Queen.

Star Wars comes to life at Many Community Center

“Long ago in a galaxy far away” became a recent Saturday night in the Many Community Center when Star Darth Vader and other Star Wars characters invaded the theater during Movies in Many.

Their visit and search for rebels thrilled children and their parents and entire families who came to see the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Book nooks closer to reality than dream

Book nooks in Many are one big step closer to reality.

Nancy Richard, who is in charge of the Cultural District project that will bring 12 little free lending libraries to different locations around town, has seen the first completed book nook. She said it looks great with room for lots of free books for adults and children.

Colston wins Louisiana poetry contest

Many High School gifted student Paige Colston was awarded first place in the Louisiana high school division Poetry Contest for her poem, “I Am Life.”

The contest is a collaboration among the LSU Ag Center and the 4-H Youth Wetlands Program; it is sponsored by the Coastal Pro-tection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).

Rivers charged in drowning death of son

A Sabine Parish grand jury returned an indictment of sec-ond-degree murder against Christina Rivers, 23, of Noble on Monday, August 7.

The charges stem from the drowning death of her two-year-old son on June 16. The indictment is under the provision of second degree murder, which deals with a death when there is no specific intent to kill but the offender is engaged in cruelty to a juvenile, a charge which includes criminal neglect of a child which causes unjustifiable pain or suffering. A conviction as charged could leave Rivers in prison for life.

Accident claims life of Robert Wates Jr.

A crash at 2:49 a.m. on August 13 claimed the life of Robert Wates, Jr., of Converse.

According to Sabine Parish Assistant Coroner Ron Rivers, the driver and only occupant of the 1999 Ford truck in question was southbound on Highway 191 just south of Fisherman’s Wharf Road was negotiating a left hand curve at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway.

Back-to-School Rally distributesfree supplies to 180 Sabine students

A total of 180 Sabine Parish students and their parents/guardians attended the 8th Annual Back-to-School Rally hosted on Saturday, August 5 in the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church of Many.

The purpose of the Rally is to distribute free school supplies, according to Mary Gore, chairwoman.

Book nooks in Many are almost here

Thanks to 11 generous sponsors, Book Nooks are now paid for and construction will begin as soon as materials arrive.
