SWCD advocates for locally-led conservation funding on Capitol Hill

On March 13, leaders including John Alan Williams from the Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District in Many joined other conservation district officials from across the nation as part of the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Spring Fly-In to advocate for locally-led conservation and adequate federal funding for conservation practices.

During their time on Capitol Hill, John Alan Williams and the Louisiana delegation met with Louisiana Congressional representatives to discuss the most significant legislative issues currently impacting conservation, including funding for crucial conservation programs through the Fiscal Year 2020 Appropriations Bill and natural resource legislation pertaining to invasive species, forestry, wild horses and the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Robinson arrested for meth distribution

The Tri-Parish Narcotics Task Force (comprised of deputies from DeSoto, Red River, and Sabine Parishes) recently concluded an investigation which resulted in arrest warrants being issued for the distribution of illegal drugs.

Akili J. Robinson, 33, of Cloutierville, was booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center on March 19 for two counts of distribution of methamphetamines.  The investigation started after several complaints were received about drug activity at Millbrooke Apartments in Florien.  Robinson was also booked on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for speeding in the town of Converse.

Ruby Medlock

Three outstanding Sabine Parish citizens will be honored with Posthumous Awards at the annual Sabine Hall of Fame Banquet, slated for Tuesday night, March 26 at Siloam Baptist Church.

Being honored this year are Ruby Medlock, Malcom Williams, and John P. Godfrey, all of Many.

Chairman of the Sabine Hall of Fame committee made the announcement this week.

Numerous instruments donated to MHS Music Talented Program

The estate of Ernest Rodrigues of Many has donated violins, guitars and a dulcimer to the Many High Music Talented Program. The instruments were collected by the late Shirley Rodrigues and were donated by the couple’s children, Sharon, Kayla, Steven and Mona. Gerald, Vicki Mitchell sponsors Bass Unlimited numbered framed

Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) is pleased to have Gerald and Vicki Mitchell sponsor the 2019 Bass Unlimited poster. Gerald and Vicki are owners of the Brisket House in Jena, Louisiana, where they work together in their restaurant and catering business.

Gerald is an avid outdoorsman and lifetime member of Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS). He has worked in the marine business, owned his own bait business, and even fished the BASS circuit for a while. Vicki spent 38 years working with John Deere and has held various positions in the church and community.

They now have a home on Toledo Bend and love fishing together and entertaining guests. Gerald enjoys participating in local fishing tournaments.

Boren named 2019 Bass Unlimited poster artist

Toledo Bend Lake Association is pleased to announce that Linda Boren has been commissioned to paint the 2019 Bass Unlimited Poster.

We are lucky to have someone so connected to the Toledo Bend Community. Ms. Boren and her husband Chuck moved to Toledo Bend in 1996 and became very active almost immediately. She served as President of the Art Guild for four years and was the poster artist for Bass Unlimited in 2005. She served on the Zwolle Poster Committee and was the 2009 poster artist for the Zwolle Tamale Fiesta. Ms. Boren was a Tourist Counselor for SRA, where she was named as a Pelican State Official Ambassador for retirees and promoted Louisiana as a preferred choice for retirement. She designed and painted four of the original large fiberglass fish located around the Parish and has recently refurbished her “Lunker” fish located at the SRA office on Highway 6.

Humanitarian Award to be presented to Sister Martinette Rivers, March 26

She sings and loves to dance. She plays the organ and is a musician. She is a missionary, who loves people and children, who has served God for 66 years as a nun. She is also a painter, teacher, and gerontologist. She is Sister Martinette Rivers.

Sister Martinette is an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to serving others. She is especially concerned about the poor and disadvantaged in the United States and abroad in far away countries.

For an 83-year-old woman, she has more energy and more love to continue her mission in life.

How many people can say they knew Mother Theresa and the Pope personally?

Aja Law, Kelsie Thaxton help Generals to best season ever

The Louisiana State University – Alexandria women’s basketball team has enjoyed its greatest season in program history, with its efforts seeing six Generals honored as All-Conference players.

Kelsey Thaxton of Many was named the Red River Athletic Conference’s Freshaman of the Year as well as a member of the All-RRAC First Team. She was the team’s second leading scorer on the year at 16.5 points per game as LSU-A’s top deep threat, hitting a team high 90 three-pointers on the season on 37.7 percent from above the arc. Thaxton also averaged 4.5 rebounds per contest. The Negreet High School alum and McDonald’s All-American nominee was also a two-time RRAC Player of the Week during the season, earing the award in back-to-back weeks.

High speed crash claims life of Owens

On February 26, a single vehicle crash killed a teenager from Robeline. The teenager was wearing a seat belt, but excessive speed is considered a factor.
