11th annual Down and Dirty Garden seminar set Feb. 22

The Sabine Master Gardeners will be hosting its 11th annual Down and Dirty Garden seminar on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Wildwood Resort in Zwolle, beginning with registration at 9 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m., with refreshments and
lunch being served. There will be a silent auction and a plant sale at the event, along with many new vendors this year

Townsend attends International Leadership Seminar

CONVERSE - Brooke Townsend, currently a senior at Converse High School, recently attended the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers (ILSSO), visiting the beautiful country of South Africa. Townsend, who was elected the Louisiana state Future Farmers of America vice president back in June of 2013, attended this annual seminar, which is a trip  somewhere out of the country, with the purpose to educate the members of FFA about international trade relations and agriculture

The 4-H Commodity Cookery Contest has been scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17 at the Sabine Parish Extension Office, according to 4-H Agent Nan Arthur. There will be five divisions of competition, including beef, poultry, egg, seafood, and  pecan cookery

Parish Junior Leaders becoming strong

The Sabine Parish Junior Leaders are growing strong. This school year they are 42 members strong, according to 4-H Agent Nan Arthur. Leading the group this year are the following officers:--President Rylea Sepulvado; --Vice President Logan Sepulvado; --Secretary Hayley Farmer; --Treasurer Morgan Manuel;--Parliamentarians Connor Arthur, Nic Farmer and Klein Pearce; and,--Service Learning Chairs Alex Bradley, Caitlyn and Brian-na Burns.

Florien FBLA officer job shadows first-grade class

Over the past few months, the Florien FBLA chapter re-porter, Crystal Slater, has been job shadowing Mrs. Kim Slaughter’s first grade class. Slater is a senior at Florien High School, and once she graduates in May, she plans on attending college to major in elementary education so she can better improve stu-dents learning skills and pre-pare them for what’s ahead in life

NSU nursing students debate health care issues

NATCHITOCHES – Students in the Community/Public Health class in the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health at Northwestern State University’s Shreveport campus held a debate recently on several health related topics. The debate covered the issues of end of life care, legalization of marijuana at the federal level, healthcare for undocumented immigrants, physician assisted suicide/euthanasia and mandated coverage of contraceptives under the Affordable Care  ct.

Florien FBLA attends NFLC in Grapevine

GRAPEVINE, Texas - On Nov. 8-9, 2013, nine members from the Florien FBLA Chapter attended the National Fall  Leadership Conference in Grapevine, Texas. This year’s national theme is Excellence in Action. Florien was the only chapter to represent  Louisiana and each day they had a blast, learning a lot of information that will become useful in the future with each student  planning on attending college
