Fourteen students from Converse High School spent a week of their summer learning about William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The students, fourth and fifth graders, attended the second year of Summer Shakespeare at CHS. Students read a children’s version of Macbeth and a Shakespeare biography before attending the day camp. Then, students discussed the characters, plot, and theme of the play before working in groups to make videos to summarize the drama. Students were then asked to plan for another small group video in which they changed some aspect of the original work. The groups wrote scripts, planned costumes and props, shot, directed, performed in, and edited their videos. On the last day of the program, families and friends attended a screening of the videos. The camp provided an opportunity for students to practice literature, writing, drama, and technology skills in a creative setting.
