SCOA staff important to success

Three important members of the Sabine Council on Aging’s office staff at the Legacy Building in Many are spotlighted this week, according to Executive Director Tammy Mangum. Lisa Ebarb is one of the first staffers you will see when you enter the Legacy Building, Sabine Council on Aging in Many. She has been serving as receptionist/administrative assistant since July. A Sabine Parish native, she graduated from Zwolle High in 2000. She is married and the mother of one child.

Spirit of Community award deadline nears

Two weeks remain for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which are open to students in grades 5-12, according to Nan Arthur, 4-H Agent in Sabine Parish. The award is open to students who volunteer for local, state and national recognition by making meaningful contributions in their communities during the past 12 months.

Mansfield SHS to host nighttime battlefield tour, October 24

On Saturday, October 24, Mansfield State Historic Site will re-create the gruesome aftermath of a Civil War battle by taking visitors on a special night tour of the Mansfield battlefield. Authentically- costumed tour guides will take visitors onto the battlefield by candle lantern, where reenactors in period dress will act out various scenes at stops along the trail. Numerous tours will be taken out during the program’s two-hour run.

“Christmas Belles” draws ...

Choir members and friends of the First United Methodist Church of Many brought the crazy characters of last year’s “Dearly Beloved” back to the stage in this year’s fundraiser dinner/theatre, “Christmas Belles.” The fundraiser, which was almost sold out in the two performances on October 1 and 3, will supply funds for this year’s annual Christmas cantata, according to Choir Director Carol Troha.

Visit Oakland Plantation in October

The weather is slowly cooling off and October is a great time to visit Cane River Creole National Historical Park; they have a variety of programs and activities for everyone. On Thursday October 8, at 7 p.m. Shreveport author Philis Caskey will be giving a lecture about her book “Skinny Dipping in Cane River.”

Sabine State Bank donates to agriculture students

Sabine State Bank of Many recently presented to the Louisiana Agricultural Teacher’s Association a check for $300. This money goes to agriculture education majors in college to assist them during their quarter or semester of student teaching. Each student is presented a check in the amount of $800 during this semester.

National 4-H Week set

National 4-H Week has been scheduled for Oct. 4-10, according to Nan Arthur, 4-H Agent in Sabine Parish. Each year during National 4-H Week, local and parish clubs have the opportunity to showcase what they have gained from their 4-H memberships through activities and events at the local level.

Programs gives glimpse of “A Soldier’s Life”

Learn about the life of the average Union and Confederate soldier at Mansfield State Historic Site on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The programs will center on the typical uniform and equipment that the soldiers would have carried and used; including not only their military gear, but also personal items which allowed them to occupy their minds and remind them of those back home.
