Bronson discusses Choctaw-Apache food traditions at Natchitoches event

On Thursday, March 17, Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. (CRNHA) and the United States Army Corps of Engineers Grand Ecore Visitors Center hosted a lunchtime lecture entitled, “A Taste of Heritage.” The lecture was the first in the series, Welcome Home: The Survival of Cultural Traditions in Modern Times and featured Dorsey Ebarb Bronson, a tribal elder of the Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb. Over 60 individuals attended and listened as Bronson discussed the traditional foodways documented in her recently published book entitled, Louisiana Cooking by Native American Choctaw-Apache.

NSU hosting high school essay contest

Submissions are open now through May 16 for Northwestern State University’s Louisiana eighth annual High School Essay Contest. The essay contest is open to all Louisiana students in grades 9-12 regardless of type of school institution, including students in all types of private educational environments, as well as home schooled students.

Shriners receive donation

A group of Sabine Parish Shriners recently received $30,000 for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children from the Oilman’s Bass Invitational, a tournament that has taken place on Toledo Bend for a number of years. The generous donation will go a long way toward the Shriners and their constant struggle for the healthcare of children nationwide.

Cultures, cuisines festival set for Natchitoches, April 12

Students from Northwestern State University’s hospitality management and tourism and culinary arts programs will host the popular International Festival of Cultures and Cuisines from 4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 in downtown Natchitoches. Booths will feature themes from countries and cultures around the world and will be manned by costumed students serving international cuisine and entertainment.

Choctaw-Apache Bass Bash held

Saturday, February 27 was a beautiful sunny day for the Fifth Annual Choctaw Apache Bass Bash that was held at North Toledo Bend State Park. Over 100 fishermen and women registered to participate in the tournament for over $2,500 in cash and prizes. Foy Motors of Many provided a $500 cash prize for the person who weighed in the largest bass the day of the tournament.

Branson singer to hold Toledo Bend concert

Phaedra Marze Clemons will be returning to her family’s home turf when she holds a concert at Toledo Bend Baptist Church Saturday, March 19 at 6 p.m. She grew up singing in the area and has many friends and family members in the area who regularly travel to Branson, Missouri, to attend her shows. Carter Sanders, a regionally known gospel/bluegrass musician and singer, will be accompanying Clemons on guitar, and he will also sing.
