Seventh annual Cane River Music Festival

 

The Cane River region has a rich tradition of live musical performance. In honor of this tradition and the Centennial of the National Park Service the park will host the seventh Annual Cane River Music Festival at Oakland Plantation on May 14. This event is free to the public.

VFW Post 4858 honors winners

VFW Post 4858 of Many recently awarded the Many Patriotism awards including: the Voice of Democracy award to first place to Hannah Lancaster; second place to Amanda Simmons; and third place to Tanner Rains. The Patriot Pen winners were first Baily Sandel who also place second in District 12; second, Macy Corley and third Thomas Parrie. The Americanism winners for category were first, Libby Pickett; and third Caymen Brooks. Category 2: Shaylee Glover; second, Amelia Fluitt; and third, Addy Martin.

Carline donates 27 gallons of pop tabs for Nugent family

Kobin Nugent, his mother, Marissa Nugent and grandfather, Rett Nugent, of Fort Jesup will be traveling to Dallas, Texas where Kobin will be seen at Our Children’s House at Baylor by many different doctors. Kobin was recently diagnosed with Nonnan Syndrome, and may need to go under intensive feeding therapy. He is an active three-year-old who was born two months early, spending two months in the NICU.

4-H cookery winners announced

A number of students put in a lot of hard work to participate in the recent 4-H cookery contest. Winners are MaKenna McElwee, ground beef participation winner; Emma Peace, ground beef first place; egg appetizer/salad participation winner, Nathan Jones; egg dessert winner Alex Bradley, second place; pecan appetizer/salad participation winner Nathan Jones; pecan dessert third place winner Navy Britt; Poultry first place winner Alison Garcia, seafood third place winner Natalie Odom with crawfish; and Tyler Gibbs won a participation award for shrimp.

Vintage Belle offers clothing, home décor, accessories

Many’s newest boutique, Vintage Belle, located on North Capitol Street next to the old telephone office, officially opened its doors Thursday, April 8 at 12:15 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce. Owner Shelly Haigh has been doing business since March 8. It has always been her dream to open a clothing store. Just recently, everything seemed to fall in place and Vintage Belle became a reality.

Sabine welding students compete at district competition

Congratulations go out to Sabine Parish high school welding students on their excellent performance at the Louisiana FFA District Welding Competition on March 15. The top scorer was Jessie Johnson, a student from Many High School, with a score of 282. There were a total of 37 competitors from schools in Sabine, Natchitoches, and Desoto Parishes.

Youth Fish Fest locked for June 4

The Toledo Bend Lake Association and Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District is hitting the ground running preparing for Fish Fest 2016. The seventh annual tournament is shaping up to be a jam-packed event on Toledo Bend Lake at the Sabine River Authority’s Cypress Bend Park. All fishermen will be spotted in their TBLA/Sabine SWCD t-shirt on Saturday, June 4. Registration is open to 150 youth and ends on April 30. Fishing time begins at 7:30 a.m. Fishermen can start fishing at any time after they check in at the registration table.

Bloodhound saves three-year-old child

Douglas Downs’ 3-year-old bloodhound, Honey, already had several impressive tracking recoveries to her credit before last week, including several wall hangers and more than 30 deer sniffed out over the last three seasons in and around the woods of Sabine Parish. But the recovery Downs won’t ever forget happened last Tuesday night off of Highway 171 between Florien and Hornbeck, and it didn’t involve an 8-, a 10- or a 12-point buck.
