Norton, Fricke to unite in matrimony

Brittany Norton and Morgan Fricke are happy to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. Norton is the daughter of Robert and Sheila Treese and Joe and Theresa Norton. She graduated from Florien High School in 2009 and is currently serving as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Technician in the United States Air Force

SCOA groups enjoy NSU production of ‘Hairspray”

A large group of local citizens from the Toledo Center and Legacy House, Sabine Council on Aging’s sites, attended the Northwestern State University’s theatrical production of “Hairspray.” Two groups rode SCOA buses to Natchitoches Thursday afternoon, Feb. 20 at 4:15 p.m. Kayla Hataway drove the Legacy House group and Jackie Snider brought the group from Toledo Center on the lake

4-H’ers participate in Cookery Contest

A total of 37 4-H students participated in the Sabine Parish Cookery Contest on Monday, Feb. 17. This year’s entries doubled in size, since many entered multiple contests, according to Agent Nan Arthur. Winners included the following:
Eggs Appetizer/Salad: 1st place— Jake Farmer; 2nd place—Logan Sepulvado; Egg/Dessert: 1st place—Nathan Jones; 2nd place—Robyn Husband; and 3rd place—Lora Peace; Egg/Main Dish: 1st—Navy Britt

La. Master Gardener program available

The Louisiana Master Gardener (LMG) program is a service and educational activity designed to recruit and train volunteers  to help meet the needs of home gardeners while providing an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for volunteers. The volunteer aspect of the Master Gardener program allows individuals to dedicate their time and talents to help educate the public on best management practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship

Three Sabine 4-H’ers attend duck hunt at Honey Brake Lodge

On Saturday, Feb. 1, three Sabine Parish 4-H’ers took part in an invitational duck hunt sponsored by the famous Honey Brake Lodge located nears Jonesville. Seventeen “Young Guns”, a group of youth who are interested in wildlife and wildlife habitat management, along with civic engagement, from around the state, were all invited to share a meal and participate in what was a once-in-a-lifetime hunt for most

Remembering the DeRidder Army Air Base

In west central Louisiana, there is a remnant of the days of the Louisiana Maneuvers and World War II that is very often
overlooked. Nestled and preserved in the town of DeRidder is the location of the old DeRidder Army Air Base, with its original hanger, runways, streets and remains of some of the World War II buildings still intact and in use! Yes, the old base is now the Beauregard Regional Airport and is continuously in use even to this day

11th annual Down and Dirty Garden seminar set Feb. 22

The Sabine Master Gardeners will be hosting its 11th annual Down and Dirty Garden seminar on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Wildwood Resort in Zwolle, beginning with registration at 9 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m., with refreshments and
lunch being served. There will be a silent auction and a plant sale at the event, along with many new vendors this year

Townsend attends International Leadership Seminar

CONVERSE - Brooke Townsend, currently a senior at Converse High School, recently attended the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers (ILSSO), visiting the beautiful country of South Africa. Townsend, who was elected the Louisiana state Future Farmers of America vice president back in June of 2013, attended this annual seminar, which is a trip  somewhere out of the country, with the purpose to educate the members of FFA about international trade relations and agriculture

4-H Commodity Cookery Contest slated for Feb. 17

The 4-H Commodity Cookery Contest has been scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17 at the Sabine Parish Extension Office, according to 4-H Agent Nan Arthur. There will be five divisions of competition, including beef, poultry, egg, seafood, and  pecan cookery

They Came Out of the Sky!

Clarence is hardly a spot on a Louisiana road map. It is most identifiable by being a crossroads where present-day La. 6
and U.S. 84 crosses U.S. 71 and is located on the east bank of the Red River. Nothing of importance ever happens in Clarence does it? Yes, there was one very great event that happened there in 1941 that forever changed the organization of the United States Army
