NWLTC-SVC donates to Operation Christmas Child

Article Image Alt Text

Since the end of October, students at Sabine Valley Campus have been collecting supplies to contribute to the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child project hosted by the campus SGA chapter. Each department had a specific list of items to be donated: business brought school supplies, welding and electrical students brought in toys, and health occupations contributed various hygiene items. Students, SGA officers, and instructors came together on Friday, November 11 to pack the campus goal of 20 boxes and prepare them to be shipped out. In order to raise money for the shipping cost of the boxes, students sold popcorn during Fridays’ events and had several generous donations from faculty and the community. SGA President Crystal Slater, Vice President Joshua Crooks, and electrical instructor Dennis Dziekan delivered the boxes to The Life Church in order to be shipped to the donation site so they can be sent to children in different parts of the world just in time for Christmas.

On Saturday, November 5, over 120 middle and high school robotics teams from Northwest Louisiana, including Converse High School, converged at the Bossier Civic Center for the a Regional Autonomous Robotics Competition (RARC). RARC competitions challenge teams of up to six students to complete various tasks using student-built robots that must be pre-programmed by the students before coming to the competition mat. The challenges are linked by a central theme such as collecting natural resources on an unexplored island. A typical task may involve the robots retrieving items from various places on the mat through the use of light, sound, color, touch, or ultrasonic sensors, or the use of gears to increase speed or torque.
