Vicente Micheli & Don Joaquin/Procella Crossing Historical Markers to be dedicated

The unveiling and dedication of two historical markers, Vicente Micheli and Don Joaquin/ Procella Crossing, will be held on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m. in Lufkin, by the Texas Historical Commission and Angelina County Historical Commission. Both markers are located one quarter to half a mile south of the Angelina River on Highway 59.

Vicente Micheli, a native of Italy, was a prominent landowner and businessman in Angelina County and several other locations in Texas and Louisiana. He is believed to be one of, if not the first, Italian immigrant to permanently settle in Texas, and in 1810, received the first patented Spanish land grant to become Angelina County. He eventually settled in San Antonio, opening a mercantile store there, and referred to himself as “the merchant of Venice.” Over the decades the Micheli name has become Americanized or changed for various reasons but there are a multitude of his descendants.

DAR observes Women’s History Month

Article Image Alt Text

Women’s History Month is observed annually throughout the month of March in the United States. It offers a time for us to consider the role of women in every sphere of the life of the Nation. One such woman that holds a special place in many DAR members’ hearts is Margaret Cochran Corbin – nicknamed by her contemporaries and known in perpetuity as “Captain Molly.” DAR highlights her enduring legacy every year during Continental Congress when presenting the Margaret Cochran Corbin Award to a distinguished woman in military service. The award honors both historic efforts of this female patriot and a contemporary woman whose own military service carries on the selfless spirit of Margaret Corbin.

Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebrated at local library

Article Image Alt Text

Children giggled, danced, squealed, and fished Saturday, February 24, at the Sabine Parish Library.

As they arrived at Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Party, they were greeted by the sound of The Cat in the Hat, aka Buster Jordan singing and playing his guitar. After making rice-filled egg shakers, the boys and girls kept time to the music. Some wandered off to fashion a tissue paper Red Fish or a Blue Fish, while others eagerly searched the stacks for pictures of The Cat in the Hat. Two by two the children took turns fishing in the pond for red, yellow, or blue fish. The photo area overflowed with colorful props, and phones flashed as the party-goers posed. Many of the boys and girls relaxed by listening to one or more favorite Dr. Seuss books. Before leaving, everyone made sure to stop by the cupcake table for a treat to take home, and parents gathered information about the new program 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. What a fun morning.
