Project Celebration fundraiser is this weekend

Lisa Veuleman, owner of Lou’s Flowers and Gifts in Many has donated a huge autumn gift basket to Project Celebration’s silent auction on October 19 at Cypress Bend golf clubhouse. The auction begins at 2 p.m. and is free to the public.

One in four women are victims of domestic abuse every year. Between 950,000 and 3 million incidents of domestic violence are reported each year, and many other incidents go unreported. It is estimated that more than 10 million women and children experience domestic violence in the United States each year.

Javon Rhodes, manager of Walmart in Many, presented a 42-inch smart tv to Cheryl Wooley and Mary Perry of Project Celebration for the silent auction fundraiser on October 19, to raise money for renovations to Taylor House, a sanctuary shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Cheryl Wooley, president of Project Celebration, is all smiles as Lee McCann, president if Sabine State Bank presents her with a generous check for Project Celebration’s annual golf tournament and silent auction on October 19 at Cypress Bend.

An employee of Walmart in Many for the past 30 years and one of the friendliest employees in the store, Patsy Rodrigues McLendon was named the Sabine Council on Aging’s Older Worker of the Year at the Year at the annual SCOA Fall Festival. Over 300 attendees applauded her as she graciously accepted the award.

It was no surprise that she captured the coveted award.

Patsy manages the toy department at Walmart and is always smiling and helpful to customers.

Four amendments on weekend ballot

Voters throughout the state will be asked to decide on four proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution on the October 12 ballot. This year’s lineup is especially challenging, as the PAR guide to the four amendments in question call them “among the more arcane proposals citizens have faced yet.” The guide, available for free at www.parlouisiana.org, was used extensively in compiling this information.

Amendment 1: Offshore Goods Property Tax Exemption

Currently, businesses and homeowners pay property tax to local governments based on the assessed value of their property on an annual basis. The Constitution allows certain exceptions, such as homestead exemptions for homeowners and the Industrial Tax Exemption Program for manufacturers.

The Zwolle Tamale Fiesta is upon us and will be held at the Zwolle Festival Grounds throughout the latter part of this week and weekend. As is tradition at the festival, each year a King and First Lady are chosen from the many residents of Zwolle to serve as royalty for the festival and many auxiliary events that build up to the big event in the weeks before.

“I wasn’t sure about the honor at first,” said Pat Rivers on being named King. “I’m not one who likes being out in front of everything, but it’s going to be fun so I got excited.”

Work to begin on Highway 175

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces, weather permitting, work will begin on the Highway 175 Rehabilitation Project on Monday, October 7 and will continue for approximately six months. This asphaltic concrete overlay and base stabilization project is located on highway from 300’ south of the intersection with Shirwillis Drive to the junction with Highway 120. This 5.522 mile overlay project will receive grading, drainage structures, milling asphalt concrete, pavement patching, in-place cement stabilized base course, in-place cement treated subgrade, asphalt surface treatment, asphalt concrete pavement, and related work.

The project was awarded to the low bidder, Madden Contracting Co., LLC in the amount of $4,061,592.74.
