“A Bad Year For Tomatoes” draws good crowds, laughs

The Sabine Parish Players, founded a number of years ago by New York actress Mary Bozeman and her husband, Bill Osborn, remains alive and well. Last weekend, May 29-31, the Players presented “A Bad Year For Tomatoes” at the Sabine Theatre in downtown Many.

Robertson holds tour of Peason Ridge

Saturday morning May 2 was a beautiful sunny morning for a tour of Peason Ridge. Those attending this tour began to arrive at Pine Grove Baptist church at 8 a.m. As the group began gathering, Rickey Robertson, the tour guide, had a large poster board map of Peason Ridge showing the many home sites, creeks, cemeteries, and historical sites located on this very historic area. He explained many of the sites that would be included in the tour.

Handgun, synthetic marijuana seized in traffic stop

Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested one person on May 20 for allegedly possessing suspected marijuana and a sto-len handgun found in his vehicle during a traffic stop.Daniel W. Efferson III, 23, of Natchitoches, was arrested af-ter he was stopped on Highway 6 near Highway 476 for traffic violations and deputies recov-ered the stolen handgun and two and a half cigarettes suspected to contain marijuana. Efferson was booked into the Sabine Par-ish Detention Center for illegal possession of stolen firearm, pos-session of Schedule I (second of-fense), driving left of center, and improper lane usage. He later bonded.

Record 81 Toledo Bend lunker bass replicas awarded

The Toledo Bend Lake As-sociation awarded 81 lunker bass replicas to anglers at the Toledo Bend Sealy Outdoors Big Bass Splash at Cypress Bend Park on May 17. This is the third year in a row that the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program has yielded a re-cord number of lunkers (58 in 2013 and 61 in 2014). The 10-lb. or larger bass were caught on Toledo Bend Lake from May 19, 2014 to May 15, 2015. Mrs. Dinah Medine, Coordinator of the TBLA Lunker Bass Program, presented the replicas to an im-pressive group of anglers on the final day of the Big Bass Splash Tournament.

Local Juneteenth offers art, music, culture

Emancipation Day, also called Freedom Day or June-teenth, celebrates the official reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth weekend, June 19-20, will provide a special time to re-flect on the history and rich cultural contributions of Afri-can-Americans.The Many Cultural Dis-trict announces several ac-tivities to honor the enormous influence African-Americans have had on both the Ameri-can culture as a whole and the creation of a distinct Black heritage.

Library Summer Reading Program kicks off June 5

School’s out and summer is here, and summer means the Sabine Parish Library’s Summer Reading Program. The 2015 Summer Reading Program, themed “Every Hero Has a Story,” will officially kick off with an entertaining and interactive program on June 5. Rhythm/Soul will be featured at the Sabine Theatre at 10 AM and at the Toledo Branch of Sabine Parish Library at 2 PM, where the dancers will share dance moves and interactive stories from around the world.

Former Agent Rose Mary Sullivan named to prestigious 4-H Hall of Fame

Former Sabine Parish 4-H Agent and Sabine Parish Chair Rose Mary Sullivan (1987-2002) was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame Saturday, May 9 in a special ceremony hosted at the 4-H Museum in Mansura. She was one of 12 inductees to the Hall of Fame, which was established in in 2008 to recognize individuals who have significantly helped Louisiana 4-H Youth reach their goals. Each year since 2008, each parish is required to submit a minimum of one nomination, but no more than three nominations, for the honor.
